There are a multitude of Spanish institutes, immersion programs, and homestay opportunities throughout Costa Rica. Students can live at the school or with a host family, join a surf or yoga program, and participate in cultural activities such as salsa lessons and cookery classes. You can also find courses that range in length, from a weekend to several months. Here are the very best places to learn Spanish in Costa Rica.

Sol Education Abroad

Sol Education Abroad is located in Heredia. This Spanish immersion program is run by the Univeridad Latina in Heredia. Aside from offering outstanding and well organized Spanish classes, as part of this course you will also have the opportunity to take cookery classes, visit a coffee farm, spend time in Monteverde, go zip lining and other adventure activities, plus take guided city and museum tours. Morpho Spanish School is located in the beautiful Orosi Valley. This small Spanish school consistently receives rave reviews. The highly experienced teachers, small class sizes (often one-on-one), unique homestay opportunity, and cultural excursions have proven to be very effective for all different levels and ages of students who choose to study at Morpho Spanish School. This affordable Spanish program is a great choice if you want to spend time in a lovely and truly local Costa Rican town where you will have ample opportunities to explore and practice your Spanish.

IPED Language Plus

IPED Language Plus has two locations, Heredia and Puerto Viejo, and has been a successful and highly respected Spanish language institute since 1984. The Puerto Viejo location offers students the chance to also surf, do yoga, volunteer, and choose from a number of activities and excursions. There are multiple different types of programs as well, such as classes for families, classes for 50+, total immersion, which includes a homestay, and even group programs for high school or college students.

2. Perfect Sunset School

If you want to learn Spanish on an outrageously beautiful beach that also happens to have great waves and yoga, the Perfect Sunset School in Playa Hermosa, Santa Teresa is an outstanding choice. For 10 years, this institute has been effectively teaching all levels and ages of students interested in learning Spanish. They also have highly experienced surf instructors and a number of different spots to take you to practice yoga. The school only accepts eight students at a time.

3. La Escuela del Sol

School

La Escuela del Sol is located in Cabuya. This school offers far more than just Spanish classes. You can combine your Spanish classes with learning and practicing fire dances, yoga, surfing, and scuba diving. There is also an opportunity to volunteer at an animal rescue program. La Escuela del Sol offers college credit, special retreats, and a variety of exciting excursions.

4. Nosara Spanish Institute

The Nosara Spanish Institute offers a variety of Spanish courses, such as a 20-hour program, 10-hour program, surf and Spanish program, family and culture program, and a yoga and Spanish program. There is also an option to completely customize your own Spanish course based on your individual needs, interests, and choice schedule. There are tons of extracurricular activities that you can do during your free time and even a chance to volunteer in the local community. Coastal Spanish Institute

The Coastal Spanish Institute is located in the lively surf and party town of Tamarindo. If you want to be located right on the beach, have nightlife options, be in close proximity to a number of amazing tours, and learn Spanish, this is a great option. They offer a number of programs for different levels and Spanish goals, as well as an option to customize your course. You can also sign up for the surf and Spanish program, since Tamarindo is one of the best places to learn how to surf.
