Going vegan in Vietnam is as easy as A-B-C. While most restaurants have vegetarian-friendly menus or are open to serving you their usuals without any meat, here are 10 that specialise in vegetarian and vegan dishes

1. Uu Dam Chay

Restaurant, Vietnamese, Vegan, Vegetarian

Welcoming you with a green garden and water stream that makes you go “oooh, damn!”, Uu Dam Chay is a cosy eatery located on Hang Bai street that connects the Old Quarter to the other districts in Hanoi. The place is very spacious, spanning multiple floors, and almost feels as if you’re dining in an art gallery. Uu Dam serves the vegetarian take of a wide variety of dishes ranging from southern to northern cuisine, including local favourites such as pho, bun cha and banh xeo. Every dish is vegan-friendly and the portions are so beautifully presented that you’ll feel a little guilty when you start to chew. There are even some Western options for you to choose from. Despite the fancy look, the dishes are extremely affordable.

2. Homefood Vegan

Restaurant, Vietnamese, Vegan, Vegetarian

Using fresh and healthy ingredients, Homefood Vegan has come up with a sumptuous menu for even meat eaters to enjoy. They source their vegetables from only trustworthy farmers, and they even have a mini-store on the first floor selling organic products and ingredients for making healthy vegan and vegetarian food in the comfort of your own home. Delivery services are also provided.

3. An Lạc - Buffet Chay

Restaurant, Vietnamese, Vegan, Vegetarian

How about a vegetarian buffet? For just $99,000 Vietnamese Dong (£3.30), you are able to eat as you please and try all of the over 50 delicious, healthy vegan dishes at An Lac. This is great for a group meal as the restaurant is spacious. However, seats and food do run out thanks to the restaurant’s popularity and, of course, the extremely attractive price tag, so we recommend you reserve yourself a table in advance. Also, do make sure you keep an empty stomach before you head over.

4. Minh Chay

Restaurant, Vietnamese

Minh Chay not only has excellent food and service but also a five-star location in the bustling old Quarter. The menu serves plenty of vegan dishes and if you don’t have enough time to browse, let alone eat, ask the staff to recommend you a full feast and get it delivered right to your door.

5. The Veg - Organic Vego & Tea

Restaurant, Vietnamese, American, Thai, European

The Veg is a mix between a restaurant and a tea/coffee house, so you can either chill out with a coffee or enjoy a nice vegan meal with your vegan friends. The space is so comfortable that you’ll want to waste half of your day relaxing and nibbling on snacks. Western options are available too, in addition to local delicacies such as vegan pizza, and even Thai-style curry.

6. Jalus Vegan Kitchen And Café

A small shop in an old, worn-out building located right in the heart of the Old Quarter, Jalus serves all kinds of healthy dishes in a cosy environment. This is a popular spot for the Western vegan community, and even seems to attract locals who are looking to take a break from their carnivorous diet. Enjoy a nice meal on the cute balcony while watching people wandering aimlessly on the street below, or stay under the A/C in the wooden-themed interior.

7. Nang Tam

Restaurant, Vietnamese, Vegan, Vegetarian

This gem of a restaurant serving home-cooked food is located in a small alley starting at 79A Tran Hung Dao street. Look for a tiny sign saying Nang Tam as you walk past the small houses. It’s a spot you will automatically remember as you will undoubtedly return here time and time again. Catering mostly to locals, the food, service and prices are fantastic. You don’t have to worry about being given the tourist price, as everyone here is honest and only wants you to enjoy Vietnamese hospitality to the fullest.

8. Sala Quan Vegan Restaurant

On the menu at Sala Quan, you will find Vietnamese vegan dishes from hotpot to noodle soups and simple salads. The spot is a little bit tricky to find since it is located in an alleyway on Ngoc Ha Street – just look for a tiny sign at the beginning of the alley. It’s a little like dining in someone’s home – the interior is very antique, with wooden furniture, flowers, and even a tiny, unused TV in the corner. Every month, on the first and 15th days of the lunar calendar, there will be a vegan buffet during lunch and dinner priced at VND$108,000 (£3.60) per person. Sala Quan is quite busy, especially during its peak hours, so if possible you should make a reservation beforehand.

9. Tinh Thuc Quan–Vegetarian Buffet

Tinh Thuc Quan is another restaurant serving a vegan/vegetarian buffet at meal times priced at VND$99,000 (£3.30) per person. The food here is delicious, with a wide variety to choose from. The staff go out of their way to help you and will recommend dishes based on your taste. There are choices of finger food, main courses, salads, desserts, and soups. Take your time, enjoy the flavours and don’t be shy to go for round two, three or perhaps four.
