Whether you naturally prefer eating a little later in the day, had a lie-in, or have been delayed heading to breakfast, here are some of the best places for breakfast and brunch in Bangkok’s bustling business heart of Silom.
A casual café-cum-bar with industrial-esque designs, Dexter Café and Bar has a typical selection of popular brunch and breakfast options. The menu includes eggs Benedict, salmon steak, salads, pasta dishes, nachos, waffles, pulled pork sandwich, and the ever-popular pad Thai. The café tries to include dishes from various corners of the world. If you’re famished, the brunch plate will hit the spot. Choose your style of eggs and enjoy sausage, bacon, salami, various hams, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, and pancakes, accompanied by a hot drink. The drinks menu is equally varied, with coffees, teas, juices, and more. There are regular deals to help you get more bang for your buck — the morning two-for-one drinks deal is especially popular.
Opening at 11 am each morning, Jim Thompson Café 9 could be a great brunch stop if you want to also browse a range of fine Thai silks. It’s an elegant eatery in its own right. The menu has a wide selection of Western fare and Thai favourites, and all dishes are beautifully presented to please the eyes as well as the stomach. Think items artistically arranged on banana leaves with decorative carved veg on the side. From soups and curries to salads, noodles, and rice dishes, the fare is tempting. They also serve one of Thailand’s most popular desserts — mango with sticky rice. Try it, you won’t be disappointed! Do note that even though the café is open until 9pm each day, food is only served up until 6pm.
Tazzina is a cute and cosy Silom café that dishes up a mean breakfast and diverse lunch options. Breakfasts are available throughout the day, including pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit, baked goodies, and more. The bacon, eggs, baked beans, and toast are ideal for anyone hankering after a traditional English breakfast. You may find the sandwiches, pasta dishes, salads, and burgers more appealing if it’s later on in the morning. If there’s still space left, order a delicious slice of cake or tart, ice cream, or another sugar-loaded dessert. Wash everything down with a hot tea or coffee as you admire the quirky stuffed toys and vintage ornaments and relax on comfy cushions.
Printa Café is a bright vision of monochrome loveliness, with beautifully presented food that tastes as delicious as it looks. The café offers modern twists on classic morning dishes, with eggs Benedict served on a bed of smashed avocado, clam linguine, fish and chips, gourmet burgers, and crab salad a few of the menu items to choose from. Visitors praise the café for its simplistic approach towards good food. The fruit smoothies are bursting with flavour and there are various global coffees if you need a caffeine fix first thing. Adding a little quirk, the café is also a showroom for designer glasses.
For a meaty morning, head to Silom’s Beef and Shake. Serving up classic American favourites, like cheeseburgers and pork burgers – along with more inventive options such as the Japanese mushroom burger – it’s a lively little burger joint. The effect is somewhere between gourmet burger and fast food, with great tastes, a casual vibe, and fast service. Feel fancy with a black charcoal bun and bulk up your brunch with fries that have just the perfect balance between crispy outsides and fluffy insides. Quench your thirst with soda or beer. Alternatively, if you order water, the restaurant will also make a donation to charity.
Take away the morning munchies with the great selection of baked goods at Panlee Bakery. There are combination deals if you just can’t decide. Try a filled BBQ pork bun, a sausage puff, or a tuna puff, and satisfy your sweet tooth with things like banana cake, almond cake, and jam roll. Perfect for breakfast or a morning snack on the go, you can grab your things to take away or take a seat on the cosy mezzanine level to savour your goodies with coffee, tea, or juice as you watch the hustle and bustle below.
A basic breakfast spot along Silom’s Charoen Krung Road, Jok Prince is perfect if you want to do breakfast the Thai way. Specialising in jok, a porridge-like rice soup dish, it may only do one main thing but it does it well. Extras include minced pork, pork balls, offal, and egg. The meal is hearty and comforting and it will certainly see you through until lunchtime. And, the prices are cheap. The restaurant is popular with Thais and expats and you may have to wait some time for a table if you come during peak hours. You can, however, also stand in line to get your breakfast to take away. Do keep in mind that there’s no English sign outside so you’ll need to keep your eyes open when looking for it.
