Taipei is something of a culinary hotspot with an incredibly diverse range of cuisines on offer throughout the city. From incredible street food to authentic beef noodles, there’s so much to try. But when you’re really craving some authentic Indian food, where’s the best place to go? Luckily for lovers of Indian cuisine, you can choose to dine at one of the city’s many Indian restaurants or buy in some imported spices and try your hand at cooking your very own Indian meal.

Restaurants

There are quite a few restaurants in the city that specialize in Indian cuisine, but one of the most well-known and possibly the oldest is Out of India in Shida. This is a great little spot to share a meal with friends and the menu is quite extensive. The guys who run it are Indian, and so you’re guaranteed to get truly authentic Indian dishes here. They even have Kingfisher beer by the bottle.

The owners of Out of India have branched out and opened a new restaurant called Three Idiots. There are three locations in the city, and each serve up classic vegetarian Indian dishes. The food is seriously good at these places, and it’s an interesting experience for those that usually prefer Indian meat dishes.

Indian fine dining

Two other well-known Indian restaurants are The Spice Shop and Saffron Fine Indian Cuisine both of which are located on the same street out in the vibrant neighborhood of Tianmu. Of all the Indian restaurants in the city, it’s these two that have a reputation for serving some of the best Indian dishes in Taiwan. Make sure to book ahead though as both can get quite busy.

Out of India, 26 Lane 13, Pucheng Street, Daan District, Taipei City, Taiwan

Three Idiots Daan Branch, 28 Lane 283 Luosifu Road Section 3, Daan District, Taipei City, Taiwan

The Spice Shop, 6 Alley 10, Lane 50, East Tianmu Road, Shilin District, Taipei City, Taiwan

Saffron Fine Indian Cuisine, 38 Lane 6 East Tianmu Road, Shilin District, Taipei City, Taiwan

Spices

But what if you fancy yourself as a bit of a cook and reckon you can rustle up a korma or rogan josh in your own kitchen? The problem is that it’s not all that easy to find the right ingredients to give your home cooked meal that proper Indian flavor. Fear not, help is at hand.

The many spices of India

There are two main suppliers of Indian goods based right here in the city. The smaller of the two is Nirala Indian Store which is located in Xinyi. This store has a limited range, but there are some great items in here, and you should be able to find the required ingredients for your home-cooked meal. The other supplier is Trinity Indian Store which has three locations across the city. This supplier has everything you could possibly need for your authentic Indian meal. Spices, salts, pastes, ghee. No matter what you need, they’ll have it here.

Nirala Indian Store, 18 Alley 157, Lane 30, Yongji Road, Xinyi District, Taipei City, Taiwan

Trinity Indian Store, 6th Floor, 23, Lane 143, Renai Road Section 3, Daan District, Taipei City, Taiwan
