The Best Bars in Zhongshan, Taipei

Taipei’s Zhongshan District was once home to a small area known as ‘The Combat Zone’, a few streets that were packed with bars. It started out as an entertainment area for locally based foreign soldiers and soon became a nightlife hotspot for visiting tourists. These days the area has changed a lot, and while there are fewer bars in the ‘Zone’, the wider district of Zhongshan is still home to some great pubs and bars. Here are a few of the best.

MUD

Bar, Pub Grub, Taiwanese

This bar is located in the basement of the Amba Hotel and, as far as hotel bars go, this is not your typical place. The décor is vintage and very cozy, giving it that Speakeasy vibe that you don’t see too much of in Taipei. They have an incredible range of drinks (more than one type of bourbon!) and a cocktail list that is quite impressive. There’s live music on from time to time, and a DJ spinning some tunes on the weekends.

If you like your whiskey, then this is the bar for you. This small but very comfortable bar has whiskey from all over the world, and it would take months to get through them all. The owner and staff are pretty knowledgeable about their drinks and will happily recommend something for those new to the whiskey scene. It’s probably one of the most relaxing places on this list and a great spot for a chilled out evening.

Three Lions Inn

Bar, Pub, Restaurant, Pub Grub, British

Located just a short walk from Yuanshan MRT, you’ll find the Three Lions Inn. It’s an English-style pub that has a very large covered beer garden. They serve decent food and have the usual beers and drinks on the menu. They also have a large screen on which they show live matches. The best thing about this place is the fact that you can grab a beer and some dinner and enjoy it outside in the shade. There aren’t many pubs in Taipei with beer gardens so this is definitely one to visit.

Crafted Beer & Co.

Bar, Pub Grub, Taiwanese

Just a few steps away from the Three Lions Inn, you’ll find Crafted Beer & Co. This place sells over 150 craft beers from around the world, including some brewed right here in Taiwan. They have four taps and rotate the beers, so there’s something new every time you visit. With such a huge range of beers available, Crafted is the best place in the neighborhood for craft beer lovers.

Green Door

Bar, Pub, Pub Grub, Taiwanese

This is one of the oldest bars on our list and dates back to the times when foreign soldiers were the main clientele. It’s a fantastic place that has a very friendly vibe with some great people working there. The drinks are reasonably priced and there’s plenty of them, but it’s the great atmosphere that makes this a place worth heading for on a night out. And it’s open all night!

Halfway There Kitchen & Bar

The customers at Halfway There come for the drinks and stay for the food. The owner of this place puts a lot of effort into the menu and it’s mouth-wateringly good. They have Guinness and Taiwan Beer on tap and a few decent Belgian beers in the fridge. They also do some pretty tasty cocktails, but like we said, this place is all about the delicious food.

The Daft House

Bar, Pub Grub, Taiwanese

The brilliantly named Daft House is a small bar with amazing staff who do their level best to make sure you’re having a good night out. They have a pretty impressive range of imported beers, and the staff are quite good at whipping up some cocktails. Interestingly, the sign also states that they are a bike shop and they have some cool looking old bike parts on the walls. Not sure they’ll fix a puncture, though.
