Taichung is a vibrant city on Taiwan’s west coast that, while once considered a hub of industry, is fast becoming a popular tourist destination for both local visitors and those from overseas. The city is also known for having some pretty lively nightclubs, but in recent years a growing number of smaller bars catering to the social drinker have appeared on the scene. Here are some of the best.

3 Giants Brewing Company is owned and run by three expats and brews signature beers and ales for a variety of restaurants and bars throughout Taiwan. The brewery itself has a brewpub attached, and it’s a great place to go for a few drinks and a chat with friends. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the food is pretty good, too. Located in Fengyuan just a short train ride from the city center, this place is a good option for those who want to get away from the busy crowds of downtown Taichung.

Bravo Beer

Bar, European, North American

The Taichung branch of Bravo Beer serves up some incredibly tasty food and a huge selection of beers from all over the world. They market themselves as a Belgian bar/café, and although the food has a very international flavor, the atmosphere and surroundings make for a cozy pub setting. They also have live bands playing from time to time and special events during public holidays. It’s a good spot for some dinner and a few drinks.

A small and cozy bar serving cocktails and a wide range of beers. This place has a great local vibe and has live bands playing from time to time. They have an acoustic session that happens most Thursdays, which is always a popular event. It’s a wonderful place for a bit of lively fun, and the staff really try their best to make sure that everyone is having a good time. This place is also open very late, so you can stay here and party all night long.

A craft beer emporium and small restaurant located in the heart of Taichung, ChangeX Beer offers an incredible selection of craft beers and tasty homemade meals. Regulars say that the 10″ pizzas are the best in Taichung, which is a pretty impressive claim to fame for a beer store. The place has a nice friendly atmosphere and with so many beers available, the staff are pretty good at recommending drinks depending on your tastes.

Belling's Deli & Bar

Deli, European

This Deli and Bar makes for an interesting combination. Fresh deli meats and tasty homemade meals are served up with local and international craft beers. The deli is open throughout the day, and they have some great specials on meal and drinks combos. It’s a nice and lively place where they show live sports at the weekends, and their outdoor seating area is perfect for afternoon beers.

Bootleggers

Bar, American

Bootleggers is a lively sports bar touted as the best place in Taichung to watch live sport. Here they have plenty of beers and cocktails on the menu along with some classic pub grub. It’s got a nice mix of both local and expat customers, with staff going all out to make all feel welcome. There’s a pool table and a darts board, too, so even if you’re not in the mood for watching sports you can still have fun at this great spot.

Vinoza

Wine Bar, French

Vinoza has several locations in Taiwan, and their Taichung branch is said to be one of the best wine bars in the city. Serving up quality European wines at affordable prices, this place is incredibly popular among local wine lovers. The décor is quite stylish, and it’s a very relaxed setting. The staff are also very professional and will gladly walk you through the wine list and perhaps even recommend a bottle or two. A wonderful place for a quiet night with a glass of wine.
