Cake is one of the universal desserts that can brighten up anyone’s day, anywhere around the world. On this little red dot, the selection of cakes in mind for a tea-time treat usually boils down to the same old places with the same old cakes. To shake things up, here’s our list of the best seven hole-in-the-wall cake shops in Singapore:

Are you a cake enthusiast? At Maple & Market, they whip up an array of cakes, and their menu is sure to change on a daily basis. One day they could have a dark chocolate cake, the next day they could have a purple taro cake. Sometimes, even both! Although Maple & Market is based in the far East of Singapore, a quick bus ride from Paya Lebar MRT station will fix the distance between you and the sweet treats that await.
Opening Hours: 12pm–10pm (Tue to Sun)

Cupplets is one of the bakeries in Singapore where you can find scrumptious, Instagram-worthy cakes. Not only do they create masterpieces out of their cakes, but they also illustrate many of their other quirky products. Decorated to finesse, their elegant floral cakes are one of the most sought-after desserts by many young, engaged couples, and of course, by Ngee Ann Polytechnic students. After all, home is surely where the heart is.

Opening Hours: 12pm–6pm (Mon to Fri)

Cake Spade

Shop

Cake Spade is a humble shop that boasts a mighty range of desserts – from rich chocolate cakes to smooth tofu cheesecakes. Wash it all down with some iced tea on a sunny day, or a cup of coffee on a rainy afternoon. The chic plates and wooden decor gives the place a bolder, more rustic feel. Just a five minutes walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station, and you’re good to go!

Opening Hours: 12pm–9pm (Mon to Thur), 12pm–10.30pm (Fri, Sat, and Eve of Public Holidays)

Hidden in the Northeast of Singapore, this French bakery is definitely a place worth travelling to. The quiet neighborhood exudes peacefulness, of comfort to those who work long hours. Imagine enjoying a warm cup of raspberry tea and slowly devouring a fresh slice of strawberry shortcake, while spending quality time away from the bustling city. Personally, it is one of the best ways to unwind on a Sunday afternoon.

Opening Hours: 11am–8pm (Tue to Thur), 11am–9pm (Fri to Sat), 3pm–9pm (Sun)

Chalk Farm

Feeling peckish after shopping around the city? Chalk Farm offers a to-go service for uniquely flavored cakes, such as pandan & adzuki bean cake and dark chocolate olive oil Cake. To add to the menu, they also offer other traditional Singaporean delights, like Kueh Salaat and Kueh Lapis. If Orchard Road is too far from where you are, don’t fret. Chalk Farm has another outlet stationed in Parkway Parade Mall on Marine Parade Road.

A 10-minutes walk from Bugis MRT Station, turn onto Haji Lane and voilà, welcome to Shop Wonderland. This place bursts with indie vibes; bunting hangs from the ceilings, and hundreds of pages from different books adorn the walls. It is only natural that their tables are topped with fresh flowers because this cafe also doubles up as a florist. It gets better – they hold flower arrangement, calligraphy and watercolor workshops as well! With all this going on, the quality and flavor of the cakes are not compromised, and they remain the main attraction of this place.

Opening Hours: 10am–6pm (Daily)

Lynn’s Cakes & Coffee

Lynn’s Cakes & Coffee is a gem in the remote West of Singapore with a similar vibe to Ciel Pâtisserie – a peaceful, minimal, quaint spot decked out in wooden tables and chairs. All their cakes are freshly made right behind the counter in their very own bakery, and the aroma could send you to heaven. It might be quite a distance to get there but they have a refreshing cup of iced lemon tea to make up for it.
