The Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in Muscat, Oman

Al Qurum is one of the better-known suburbs of the capital city of Muscat. It is located in the north of the city by the Gulf of Oman. Being in the heart of modern Muscat, Al Qurum is a touristic destination with lots of available facilities like shops, malls, restaurants and parks. The city has the Marah Park (the Fun Park) and Al Qurum National Park, which is great for families. Al Qurum also has several international schools and homes vary from big villas to houses and apartments. With great facilities provided and easy access to different services, Al Qurum is one of the best neighbourhoods to live in Muscat.

Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos means the ‘City of the Sultan Qaboos’, who is the current leader of Oman. It is a well-known residential area that is located in the centre of the Muscat Governorate. Accommodations vary between apartments and big villas, and services in the city include various cuisine restaurants, supermarkets, coffee shops, a clinic and international schools. It is near several embassies, like the British embassy, and is only one kilometre away from the beach. The roads in the city are pedestrian-friendly with minimal traffic and offer easy access to different facilities and services. It is close to the suburbs of Al Qurum and Al Khuwair.

Ruwi is known as the business district of Muscat and it is one of its oldest districts. Although the district has been modernized, some parts still hold their ancient spirit through old mud houses and narrow streets. Ruwi doesn’t have a shopping mall but it has a big supermarket called LuLu Hypermarket, as well as other small shops around the city. It is busier and more congested than other neighbourhoods, but prices for apartments in Ruwi are much cheaper.

Al Khuwair is a unique neighbourhood in Muscat that combines both commercial and residential buildings. The city has lots of shops, restaurants, cafes, clinics and medical centres, but few supermarkets and no hospitals. It is located near Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos and is very close to the beach.

Muttrah is another ancient district in Muscat. It used to be the centre of commerce in Oman, as one of the largest seaports in the country, until the discovery of oil. The city is famous for the traditional Souq of Muttrah, which holds several shops selling local, regional and international goods. Muttrah is surrounded by the Sultan Qaboos Port, its corniche, and is close to Al Riyam Park. It is one of the best neighbourhoods in Oman that combines Omani culture, heritage and tradition with the modern and powerful nation Oman has become.

Al Azaiba is a residential area located along the beach between the Al Qurum suburb and the Muscat International Airport. The city has few shops and an international school, but most services and facilities can be found in neighbouring cities. Located on the beach, accommodation prices are slightly more expensive than in other neighbourhoods in Muscat, but they can also depend on the type of accommodation you are looking for.
