9 Malaysian Comedians That Are Sure To Make You Laugh

As the saying goes, ‘laughter is the best medicine’ and most of us want to have a good laugh. The stand-up comedy scene in Malaysia is slowly growing by having open mic nights at live venues and annual LOL Fest and Kuala Lumpur International Comedy Festival (KLICFEST). Here are the Malaysian comedians that will make you laugh.

Harith Iskandar

Harith Iskandar is known as the godfather of Malaysian stand-up comedy. He has been performing for more than 20 years and continues to come up with unique jokes loved by local and global audiences. His impersonations and comedic actions along with ‘situation’ jokes will make you laugh so much your stomach hurts. He is the winner of Laugh Factory’s 2016 Funniest Person in the World and Asia’s Best Stand-up Comedian Award by Top 10 Asia Award 2014. He is also the host of his own show ‘Obviously Harith Iskander’ where he interviews celebrity guests and showcases his humour.

Kuah Jenhan

Kuah Jenhan is an all-round entertainer in radio, TV, film, and performing arts. His act mainly focuses on funny descriptions of people. He has performed in Australia many times including comedy festivals in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne and solo tours (‘Like This, Like Dad’ and ‘Perfect Stanger’). He is the member of the MACC (Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians).

Jason Leong

Jason Leong used to be a medical practitioner till he decided to take the stage. In 2013 he won the 7th Annual International Hong Kong Comedy Competition which gave him the huge opportunity of performing at Laugh Factory, Hollywood and Gotham Comedy Club, New York. He had sold-out shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2015 and 2016. This year he has his first solo show (for four nights) ‘You Stupid or What?!’ in Malaysia. He uses his medical background to make jokes about health and lifestyle. He actively performs together with the MACC members.

Joanne Kam

The Queen of Comedy Joanne Kam is not afraid to tell witty, sassy, and sexy jokes to the audience. Dressed in tight fitting sequin dresses and shiny accessories, she performs with her unique sharp-tongued humour. She is one of the well-known female comedians in Malaysia. She has performed together with Singaporean comedians (including Gurmit Singh and Kumar) in ‘Laugh Die You’. She organized the Super Kam stand-up comedy show series that featured only female comedians (including herself). She appeared in Malaysia’s stand-up comedy shows ‘Tonton Stand Up’ and ‘Oi! Jaga Mulut’. She currently runs her own radio show ‘Seriously Kam’ with comedians Papi Zak and Kavin Jay.

Kavin Jay

Kavin Jay frequently performs on Kuala Lumpur’s comedy scene, including Crackhouse Comedy Club. His constant flow of grumpy jokes, based on his everyday experience in Malaysia and his travels, will make you burst out laughing. He has done opening acts for Harith Iskander, Douglas Lim, and Singaporean comedian Kumar. He has appeared in Malaysia’s all-English stand-up comedy show ‘Komediri’. He founded One Mic Stand PJ Live Arts which features up-and-coming stand-up comedians every week. He made his first one-night only show ‘Daddy Issues’ at Bobo KL, one of Kuala Lumpur’s live venues.

Rizal Van Geyzel

Rizal Van Geyzel is one of the rising stand-up comedians in Malaysia. With his experiences as a Malaysian with Malay, Chinese, Turkish and Dutch descent, he jokes about the multicultural Malaysia with honesty and humour. He has collaborated with well-known Malaysian comedians, appearing with Harith Iskander, Jason Leong, and Kavin Jay as ‘Malaysian Mirth Mafia’ at Singapore Comedy Fringe Festival in April 2014. He regularly does stand-up at Crackhouse Comedy Club.

Douglas Lim

Douglas Lim started as songwriter and actor on screen and theatre in the early 2000s. He has since turned his focus to being a stand-up comedian. He performed on the MACC Nationwide Tour with Jason Leong, Kuah Jenhan, and Phoon Chi Ho, King & Queen Comedy of Asia, Laugh Die You, and Comedy Clubs in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Singapore. Recently, he has been touring across Australia. He also actively shares funny videos about current issues and trends on his Facebook page.

Papi Zak

Papi Zak tells people that he is Malay as some think he is from America due to his accent. He is the child of a diplomat, born in Egypt, raised in Japan and Germany, and then studying in America. His wit and good humour spreads to his audiences. In 2003 he started performing at open mic nights and performing together with Jit Murad, Douglas Lim, and Harith Iskander in ‘Eh… Got Free Ticket Ah?’. He was the host for Joanne Kam’s ‘Super Kam 3: It Gets Wetter’. He recently showcased his performance in ‘Oi! Jaga Mulut’ with Joanne Kam.

Keren Bala Devan

Up-and-coming stand-up comedian Keren Bala Devan makes honest remarks about hipsters, pop culture, and everyday life. He has been performing in major comedy festivals including LOL Fest and KLICFEST (Malaysia) and International Comedy Fringe Festival (Singapore). He is part of The Angry Indians Comedy Group and recently appeared in Comedy Central Asia’s ‘Stand Up, Asia!’ and Malaysia’s stand-up comedy show ‘Oi! Jaga Mulut’.
