Israelis take the first meal of the day quite seriously, so it’s no surprise that the bustling neighbourhood of Lev Ha’ir in Tel Aviv is populated with cafés. Follow Culture Trip’s guide to discover the best breakfast spots in the area.

1. Nehama Vahetzi

Centrally located and just steps away from Habima Square, this well established restaurant-café has been a neighbourhood favourite for years. From the giant frittata and interesting beetroot shakshuka, to the impressive “breakfast for two” platter, Nehama Vahetzi gives customers food to rave about. With one of the nicest balconies in Tel Aviv and a laid-back atmosphere, this is an excellent spot to start off the day.

2. Bucke Cafe

The quirky yet casual Bucke Café is also a favourite in the neighbourhood. Situated near Habima Square, just off Rothschild Boulevard, the café offers delicious, healthy and affordable breakfast options that include beautifully presented vegan platters and Israeli classics such as shakshuka. Grab a seat on one of its street-facing tables and watch people go by while enjoying an afuch (cappuccino) and a few chocolate-chip cookies.

This small café chain is popular for its 100% organic coffee and freshly prepared healthy food. The menu, which changes seasonally, features tehina, fresh vegetables and salads, in addition to vegetarian sandwiches. The classic “Israeli breakfast” (eggs of choice, tuna, labneh cheese, salad and bread) and the shakshuka are excellent choices for those feeling particularly hungry. With three branches in Lev Ha’ir, we recommend the most tranquil, which is tucked away in the gardens behind Habima Square.

4. WayCup Coffee

Coffee lovers will be delighted with WayCup Coffee. There are two branches, the smaller and more charming one located on Yonatan HaSandlar Street. Enjoy a sit-down with the best cup of coffee in town and a freshly baked pastry. The menu is small with just a limited selection of fresh sandwiches, but most people choose this café for its amazing coffee.

5. Herzl 16

Bar, Restaurant, Contemporary, Ramen, French, Japanese

This uber trendy café is hidden away from Rothschild Boulevard in the enchanting courtyard of a historic building. The new incarnation of the much loved Rothschild 12 café-bar, Herzl 16 serves up excellent cups of coffee, as well as breakfast options including fresh pastries and avocado toast. There are plenty of choices, including several Japanese-influenced dishes such as the okonomiyaki (a savoury omelette).

6. Benedict

Restaurant, North American

Since its launch in 2006, the Benedict chain has achieved famed status for its 24/7 gourmet brunch. The Lev Ha’ir branch is located on the busy corner of Rothschild and Allenby Street, and is a hugely popular spot among locals and tourists alike. The eggs Florentine with creamed spinach are spectacularly good, and the decadent pancakes are perfect for those with a sweet tooth.

A hidden oasis, off the hectic Allenby Street, this café’s charming garden is a favourite hangout spot for Tel Aviv’s young, hipster crowd. It offers delicious and affordable breakfast options, from avocado and salmon open sandwiches to fresh pastries, while its seven-hour Guatemalan cold brew is, arguably, the best in Tel Aviv.

8. Citizen Garden
