10 Israeli Indie Acts To Watch Out For In 2016

Deborah Moher

A couple of years ago Asaf Avidan was one of the only indie acts to come out of Israel and achieve international attention. Now, more and more Israeli indie bands are popping up and making a name for themselves in the global music scene. From cool electronic beats to quirky acoustic sounds, these 10 up-and-coming indie acts are some of the most impressive we’ve heard and will be ones to watch in 2016.

The Middle Beast

One of the hottest up and coming bands, The Middle Beast is a serious rock and roll act bringing back the sounds of soul of legends like Led Zepplin and Jimi Hendrix. Their live performance sounds like they have been playing together for a decade with a dizzy rhythmic fresh sound. Catch them performing March 5 at the Pasaz.

Full Trunk

It’s impossible to believe Full Trunk are Israeli, with an American influenced bluesy sound and with legendary artists like Ray Charles and Eric Clapton influencing their music with a throughly modern blues touch. Full Trunk have been on the live performing scene for a few years now, working hard writing and performing. The hard work has paid off with their Netherlands tour coming up this summer.

Balcony and Beyond

Already regulars on the festival scene, Balcony and Beyond have performed at popular Israeli indie festivals InDNegev and The International Music Showcase IL. The band is known for their rock style with musical influences like grunge and new wave. With a number of upcoming live shows in Tel Aviv this is a group you’ll be hearing about in 2016. Their next upcoming show will take place on March 12th 2016.

Jane Bordeaux

This acoustic folk country trio play with an unusual mix of a guitar, double bass and a tambourine. This is the first time an American folk country music band have performing in Hebrew. They have already released a debut album which was received with rave reviews and have tour dates lined up all over Israel. Jane Bordeaux’s unique sound is not to be missed.

Lola Marsh

Indie band Lola Marsh is signed by Anova music and has already had two singles go viral in 2015. Lola Marsh is made up of one part Yael Shoshana Cohen and Gil Landau. Having already broken through to the international music scene Lola Marsh made a impression in LA when they performed for the influential L.A. radio station KCRW. Drawing from a diverse range of musical influences as far as Edith Plaf and Elvis, this talented duo is headed for success.

System Ali

System Ali, a ten-piece hip hop group is a melting-pot of sorts, rapping in Arabic, Hebrew, English and Russian. They first began performing in shelters in Jaffa in 2006 as a creative way of focusing away from the trouble on the ground by finding a peaceful outlet. Their sound reflects the unique and eclectic nature of the group using many languages and musical styles. A definite rising star.

Sun Tailor

Sun Tailor, also known as Israeli musician Arnon Naor, has been on the performance circuit for a while after living in London for a number of years and playing with a number of bands. In 2007 Arnon started writing his own material and released his debut album ‘like the tide’. He toured Israel with his band in 2011 and then broke into the European music scene whilst touring in London and Paris. Sun Tailor’s musical style is indie folk accompanied by a huge instrumental range of powerful instruments.

Zohara

Also known by her full name Zohara Niddam, Zohara famously recorded her first album, ‘Growing up anyways’ in her bedroom. At age 28 her music deals with mistakes people make in their 20s. With a clear electronic pop sound, mixed with some jazz and classical influences she is already making waves in London and beyond.

Autoscopy

Autoscopy is an alternative progressive rock act with musical influences like Queen, Muse and the Foo Fighters. This four man rock group formed in 2013 and have just released their first single Temptation. Autoscopy’s sound is rock mixed with a touch of electronic pop. These boys are in the early stages but are headed for greatness.

Russo and Weinberg

Already regulars on the coffee shop and bar performing scene, Russo and Weinberg have made a name for themselves in Israel as the king and queen of indie folk music. Made up of muscians Adi Weinberg and Erez Russo, both voices are beautifully sweet and easy to love. The combination of a male and female voice harmonizing is irresistible. One of their single’s ‘Bringing you Down’ is an emotional and beautiful musical composition.
