While Kolkata had been lagging behind in the trend – its first proper craft brewery only opened its doors in 2016 – the city is now catching up with a flurry of activity. Here are three of the best places in Kolkata to hit up for a perfectly brewed beer.

1. Beer Republic

You’ll feel at home here if you love beer, as the name suggests. While the ambience may not be as stellar as some of Kolkata’s best pubs, this pared-back drinking den more than makes up for it with great food and very reasonable prices. The craft beers on offer here include Blonde Beer, a light-bodied specialty wheat ale; Amber Beer, a premium lager brewed using barley malts and hops; Brunette Beer, a full-bodied dark ale; and Republic Beer, a mix of European red malts and hops.

Among the newest of Kolkata’s craft breweries, The Grid also happens to be an excellent gastro-pub. With a relaxing ambience, delicious food and a good choice of beers (of course), this lively haunt has already carved a space for itself as one of the coolest places to unwind in Kolkata. Located in Topsia, The Grid brews a monthly-changing variety of beers, and offers a handy try-before-you-buy policy.

3. Country Roads

Situated in Rajarhat New Town, this tastefully decorated microbrewery provides top-notch service, tasty eats and ambience, in addition to a small range of craft beers. There’s a comprehensive drinks menu, so your non-beer-drinking friends won’t complain. Among the brews on offer, the Belgian Blond and Irish Dark are popular with regular patrons.
