Kala Niketan

Indian saree

With its roots beginning in 1942, Kala Niketan is an important institution in the city’s garment industry. While the head office is in Marine Lines, they also have outlets in Juhu and further afield in Pune and Baroda. They sell traditional and specialized designer sarees, banarasi and kancheepuram, and with designs old and new – there’s something for everyone.

Nalli

This Chennai-based textile chain has three outlets in the city – in Thane, Goregaon and Mahalaxmi – and considering its popularity, there’s no saying how many more may open in the near future. After all, they have outlets even in Singapore and California. Their kancheepuram silk offerings are unbeatable and the service at their stores are particularly delightful.

Khatri Jamnadas Bechardas

Over a hundred years old and still going strong, Khatri Jamnadas Bechardas has earned a name among makers of bandhani sarees in the country. Etablished in 1910 as a modest retail shop, they now offer a sophisticated online shopping experience to their patrons. Bandhani involves a unique style of tie-and-dye textile weaving common in the Indian regions of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Tamil Nadu. The resulting gorgeous and intricately coloured sarees are a huge hit nationwide. And few other stores offer a selection as wide as Khatri Jamnadas Bechardas.

Roopkala Sarees

Colorful Saree shop

A huge hit among brides-to-be, Roopkala Sarees offers chic designer sarees as well as plain, more traditional sarees. Offerings also include lehengas, cholis, salwar suits and designer shoes. Their first store opened in Marine Lines in 1952 and a second one catering to the northern suburbs was opened in Santa Cruz in 2012. They also have a vibrant online store.

Kalki Fashion Store

Kalki is best known for its hip and modern spins on traditional attire but the designer sarees are particularly worth checking out. From basic, yet chic, to contemporary, their saree offerings are many. They too offer an online shopping experience but it is quite limited in comparison to what is available on-site.

Kaysons

Founded in 1980, Kaysons has specialized in curating weaves from across the country. Kaysons offers a variety of sarees, particularly bridal and designer sareers, in addition to lehengas, kurtis, salwar kameez and more. It even features a range of dupattas and shawls.

Sagar

This Indian clothing store has expanded dramatically since its modest beginnings as a small retail outlet in 1963. With a variety of saree offerings in silk and cotton, they continue to remain one of the top saree outlets in the city. Salwar suits and designer lehengas are also worth checking out here.
