Book a stay in one of the 542 suites perched high above Victoria Harbour, then treat yourself to the Plateau Spa, the 24-hour fitness club, the Grand Club lounge or one of the nine top-notch dining options. The Olympic-size heated outdoor pool on the 11th floor looks out over the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Star Ferry Pier and the Central skyline.

2. The Fleming Hong Kong

This 66-room boutique hotel is the chicest place to stay in Wan Chai. Design firm A Work of Substance has created an Art Deco space that evokes Hong Kong in the 1960s and ’70s; the vintage furniture, rounded doors and green-and-brass colour scheme take their inspiration from the city’s iconic Star Ferry, whose pier is about 1km (0.6mi) away. The Fleming’s luxurious lounge, bespoke Luxe City Guide and custom-built in-room amenities are other highlights.

The property is upscale, but doesn’t cost a fortune. Wanchai 88 is another good-value choice in the middle of the district, offering accommodation fringed by commercial skyscrapers, high-end retail and exciting bars and restaurants. The 79 tasteful rooms feature artwork produced by local creatives, state-of-the-art facilities such as rain showers and spectacular views of Victoria Peak.

It’s home to not one, but two Michelin-star restaurants, offering French and Chinese delicacies. A tea sommelier is available to guide you through the pairings with your lunch service – and who could forget the personalised St. Regis Butler Service?

This hotel is a five-minute walk from the Pacific Place shopping mall and transit stations. It offers sleek modern design elements and a breakfast buffet for a fee. There are no on-site lunch and dinner options, so it’s better suited for the on-the-go explorer hoping for a comfortable place to rest their head at night. It does have a gym, however, stocked with both cardio and weight machines.
