For most of the people who come to Beijing by air, Shunyi is their first impression of the city (The Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport is in Shunyi District, while the T2 is in Chaoyang District). The suburban district, located in the northeast Beijing outside the 5th Ring Road, is known not only for the airport, but also for its large community of Hui people and the New China International Exhibition Center, the biggest exhibition center in north China. Add this article to your list because you are definitely going to need it.

1. Fushou Restaurant

Restaurant, Chinese, Halal

The halal restaurant is the most famous dining place in Shunyi. It is so well-known that some people drive to Shunyi from the inner city on purpose just for a meal there. The restaurant’s specialty, the copper hotpot, is regarded by some to be even better than the celebrated Jubaoyuan Restaurant on Niujie in terms of the mutton’s quality. The mutton skewer is a must-try too.

2. Yi Kao Cheng Ming

Restaurant, Chinese

Other than the mutton hotpot, Shunyi is also known for its skewer restaurants, especially because the Hui community inside Shunyi makes sure the quality of the mutton and beef is top notch. It is almost an unwritten tradition that the copper hotpot is for winter while the skewer restaurants are for summer, when you can sit in the yard with your friends and feast on the skewers while drinking beers like a fish. The Yi Kao Cheng Ming is one of the most famous skewer restaurants recommended by Shunyi locals.

3. Italian Farm

Farm, Budget Hotel

The Italian Farm is a wonderful restaurant for guests who are tired of the drab urban scenery in Beijing. The authentic farm has its own vegetable farmland, animal farms, and fish pond. The Italian dishes served on your table are all cooked from the fresh ingredients plucked or butchered that day. If one meal is not enough for you, they also have a hotel for you to spend your longer holiday there.

4. Miao Chu Lao Die

Restaurant, Chinese

This restaurant is known for its specialty, the stone pot fish steamed from spring, which is literally fish steamed from the spring water (served in plastic bottles) in the stone pots. You can choose from five kinds of fish and ten different flavors. The restaurant is also equipped with a rooftop garden from where you can overlook the whole Luoma Lake.

5. Manna Bakery & Restaurant

Bakery, Cafe, Restaurant, Healthy

Rejoice, night owls in Shunyi, as there’s a lovely place for brunch even if you wake up only to find out that it’s already midday—the Manna bakery & Restaurant. The family restaurant that specializes in Western-style brunches has almost every healthy dish that you can see on Instagram, be it the avocado juice, the raspberry bagel, or garden salad. The bread and cakes there are not only delicious, but also good-looking enough for your Instagram image of the day.

6. Plan in Motion Café & Bar

Bar, Cafe, Restaurant, Pub Grub

For airplane enthusiasts who don’t have short-term plans to go to the Beijing Capital International Airport, here’s another option provided by this Boeing 787-themed western café & bar also in the Shunyi District. The décor seems to remind you constantly that it’s an aircraft-themed restaurant, from the adornments of wings and propellers to the illustrated paper put on the table. The restaurant’s low light provides a nice private space for lone diners or a small group of friends.

7. Qinmen Shaanxi Cuisine

Restaurant, Chinese

You probably won’t notice Qinmen Shaanxi Cuisine among the many restaurants in the Shunyi BHG Mall, just like you probably won’t choose the mall out of all the entertainment facilities in Shunyi District, but the undistinguished restaurant is one of the few restaurants that remain in the secret collection of the locals. It has nearly all the famous Shaanxi dishes, including sesame paste cold noodles, rougamo, and biangbiang noodles.
