This incredible contemporary house in Vienna by Ad2 Architekten is all about creating private spaces in an overlooked city plot – including a hidden courtyard that wraps around a huge tree.

The unusual four-storey house cleverly twists and turns to conceal some areas from sight, while also maximising the best views and providing plenty of natural light.

The jewel in the crown is the cantilevered pool that benefits from amazing views, while avoiding eating into the lawned garden area.

Like shards of glass, the angular windows are strategically placed throughout the home to provide as much daylight as possible, without looking directly into neighbouring properties.

Skylights, walk-on roof lights, smartly placed mirrors and reflective surfaces all contribute to this feeling of light and airy spaces, despite the dramatic dark interiors.

To help create a cosier space, padded fabric surfaces have been used throughout to add texture, plus a large fireplace has been installed for the winter months. A dark scheme gives the property a cohesive, harmonious feel, sticking to a monochromatic colour palette mixed with hints of metallic grey and ‘galaxy blue’.

Everything has been custom-made to fit the distinctive shape of the house precisely, including the bespoke fitted kitchen, geometric-shaped seating and wall panels.

Wherever possible, the architects have ensured there’s a connection between the external spaces and the internal floors; the living space, for example, is seamlessly connected to the terrace and pool with flush Corian tiles that run continuously from inside to outside and huge sliding glazed panels that can be opened up in the warmer months.
