The Top 7 Places to Watch Football in Buenos Aires

It goes without saying that the best place to watch football in Buenos Aires is either at La Bombonera or El Monumental, the sacred home grounds of Argentina’s two best football clubs. Unfortunately, however, those who don’t have a membership will find it very difficult and expensive to secure a seat. But worry not because there are plenty of great sports bars around the city where you can watch a game instead.

1. Gibraltar

One of the best English pubs in the city, Gibraltar provides a warm and homely atmosphere to watch rugby, cricket and, of course, football while munching on some typical English fare that includes a great selection of curries. There’s also a generous happy hour and a pool table to keep punters amused between matches.

2. LxF

Bar, Pub Grub

LxF stands for Locos por el Futbol (Crazy about Football), and the name pretty much sums it up. It’s a great place to watch the beautiful game surrounded by passionate locals rather than drunk foreigners (see below). This Colombian-owned international chain is a little on the pricey side, but upon sampling their great tapas and admiring the stylish interior, it’s easy to see why.

3. Sugar

Bar, American, Pub Grub, Fast Food

Sugar is an American-style sports bar with three large TVs showing the day’s most important highlights as well as cheap beer and what they claim is the best burger in Buenos Aires. But be warned – it’s got a bit of a backpacker vibe and gets rowdy at times, especially when beer pong tournaments reach fever pitch. As you would expect, the atmosphere is particularly good during National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL) and American political events.

4. El Álamo

Bar, Pub Grub

Also known as Shoeless Joe’s, this place attracts a similar clientele as Sugar. El Álamo is another American sports bar with a raucous, frat party atmosphere that is a favourite meeting spot for international and local college students who come to play quarters, beer pong and drink themselves silly. On the bright side, the live sports section of this huge multi-storey complex is slightly more subdued, and they offer cheap pitchers along with a decent selection of American and Mexican food.

5. El Gol de San Telmo

An excellent San Telmo option for a relaxed place to watch a game, El Gol de San Telmo is focused on football, so don’t expect to see any other sports here (at least if there is a soccer game on at the same time). It’s got a great selection of snacks and craft beers for reasonable prices.

6. Dubliners

Bar, Argentina

As the name suggests, Dubliners is an Irish bar. Don’t get too excited, though, as there is pretty much no legit Irish food or drink in sight. At least the décor and atmosphere is fairly authentic, and there are plenty of TVs showing all the best sporting action.

7. Atlanta Sports Bar and Grill

Bar, Pub Grub

Another American-style sports bar, but this time with a much more family-friendly atmosphere. Atlanta Sports Bar and Grill serves up great burgers, wings and other American staples while its large array of flat screens is enough to keep everyone happy.
