Neubau is one of Vienna’s best destinations for vintage shopping, with both cheaper thrift-style stores and more upmarket and expensive retro boutiques. St. Ulrich’s church is one of the architectural gems of the 7th district and the heart of the neighbourhood. The church, as it stands today, was built in the 17th century and it is a striking example of Baroque architecture, with a sandy-coloured facade and statues of saints.

Walk to the end of Burggasse and you’ll find a wealth of art and culture packed neatly into one square. Vienna’s Museum’s Quarter has a diverse selection of institutions inside a 60,000-metre-square area, including the finest modern art museum in the city, MUMOK, and the modernist gallery, Leopold. As well as all the incredible exhibition halls, there are many free events happening in the courtyard year round. Cultural highlights that are off the beaten track in the 7th district include the street art Galerie Hubert Winter, which is situated just around the corner from the Museumsquartier. Presenting a mix of both Austrian and international artists, this contemporary space is dedicated to keeping its finger firmly on the pulse of the art world.

As this is an area popular with Vienna’s students, Neubau is not short of bars and cafes. Fifties-style Cafe Espresso is a popular place to get an evening tipple and Cafe Prosecco Bar, once an exclusively local joint, has recently attracted a younger crowd. If your evening extends into the small hours, DonauTechno keeps its doors open until 6 am on weekends. If on a shoestring and visiting in the summer months, grab a few cans of beers and head to the aforementioned Museum’s Quarter, where you can lounge on the large pieces of furniture that are arranged around the courtyard.

Sweat away your troubles inside Neubau’s own sauna at Hermannbad – a treat in Vienna’s vicious winter months. Female-only days are held and there is a sizeable pool for swimmers who would like to workout before heading into the heat.

With traditional Austrian restaurants, modern Asian eateries and everything in between, there’s something for every type of foodie in Neubau. Pho84 is a charming Vietnamese joint on Neubaugasse serving some of the best Asian soups in town. The cosy Tsutenkaku Sushi-Haus makes amazing maki while Restaurant Landia is known for their delicious vegan food. Restaurant 1070 is also highly recommended.

As well as the ubiquitous würstlstands, kebab and falafel stalls are common in this city. Open late into the night, they are perfect for lining revellers’ stomachs. Berliner Döner, which you’ll find located on Zieglergasse, is known as one of the most highly recommended. Fresh, fast and filling, it makes a very fine midnight snack. Veggies don’t miss out either, with delicious falafel or cheese wraps and sandwiches as an alternative to the meat version.
