Fiji attracts a varied crowd, with the yacht crowd coming here for the clear lagoons, backpackers for island escapism and families for private island retreats in the tropics. Whether you prefer an eco-resort rooted in the local community or a luxurious retreat, Fiji has them all. Explore the 300 tropical islands that make up this South Pacific archipelago, complete with volcanic peaks and lush forests.

Watch the tropical fish swim under your bungalow at Fiji’s first overwater accommodation. The adults-only Likuliku Lagoon Resort is popular with honeymooners due to its peaceful beachfront rooms and romantic atmosphere. Some options have private plunge pools butting up to the sand and outdoor jungle rain showers. If you decide to leave your room, resort facilities include a dive centre, a gym, a restaurant, bars and a library, while snorkelling, surfing and fishing are some of the activities on offer.

Lomani Island Resort

Spend lazy mornings on the beach and adventure-filled afternoons snorkelling, waterskiing or hiking at this adults-only resort. The emphasis here is on couples; Romani is even the Fijian word for love. With only 30 suites (all in a modern, white-walled style rather than the traditional decor of many resorts), Lomani manages to feel just private enough, especially the beachfront villas with private pools. Up the romance factor with a treatment at the beachfront spa.

Tambua Sands Beach Resort

The Coral Coast provides a peaceful backdrop for the 25 secluded villas of Tambua Sands Beach Resort, set among 7ha (17 acres) of tropical landscape. Those looking for some peace will find it here, with no neighbouring resorts. While the garden rooms offer mountain views, each beachfront bure (Fijian bungalow) has a private plunge pool. There is also a communal freshwater pool, surrounded by the jungle, but don’t expect a lively pool bar. Instead, borrow kayaking gear to paddle the lagoon – you’ll likely have it all to yourself.

One island, three beaches, 10 bungalows and one restaurant – that’s what you’ll find at the adults-only Navutu Stars Fiji Resort. The Mediterranean-style bures lie between the ocean and a sprawling jungle of fragrant hibiscus, frangipani and coconut palms. In short, you come to Yanggeta Island to embrace nature in solitude. With soaring 8m (26ft) ceilings, the airy rooms may nod to the heritage of the Italian owners, but the experiences on offer are all rooted in the South Pacific. Though it has a spa and offers free hatha yoga sessions beside the ocean, the best relaxation is found gazing into the water on the resort’s daily boat trips. Explore local villages, limestone caves and Fiji’s Blue Lagoon.

For a truly relaxing getaway with the family, stay at Castaway Island Fiji. It has a kids’ club for the little ones, meaning they can explore the trees and ocean and make shell necklaces rather than sit in front of a screen all day. Book the family bures right on the beachfront for easier access to the resort’s restaurants and sporting facilities. Sip a cocktail from the rustic beach bar, lounge by the two pools or book a massage.

Savasi Island Resort

Just off the south coast of Vanua Levu, Savasi Island Resort is only 10 minutes from Savusavu Airport, yet it feels secluded. The 10 lofty villas, jutting out on volcanic outcrops over the sea, are surrounded by the jungle and have private pools. Alternatively, the floating, adults-only Serenity, a 43m (140ft) three-masted schooner with a cinema and bar, has five staterooms. The Reef Dining Room and Bar serves meals daily at no additional cost; it also possible to dine in a secluded waterfront cavern or on a private beach beneath the stars.

With just 15 villas set among 17ha (42 acres) of tropical gardens, there’s ample space to explore, laze and swim at Qamea without feeling crowded. However, the intimate feel doesn’t mean the resort lacks facilities. It has the only Guinot spa in the South Pacific, a PADI-accredited dive operation and daily activities such as snorkelling, catered picnic lunches and hiking. All bures and beach houses have outdoor showers, while many also feature private swimming pools or jacuzzis.

Matamanoa Island Resort

This small island resort prides itself on welcoming guests like family. In the Mamanuca Islands, this volcanic cone is surrounded by a marine sanctuary. While it’s only 30km (19mi) west of the Nadi International Airport, this adults-only resort feels entirely secluded. There are 10 beachfront villas, 24 beachfront bures and 13 garden-view resort rooms; all have an outdoor shower, a thatched gazebo, a plunge pool and decor inspired by Fijian crafts. However, it’s the warm welcome that stands out. Each night, a string band will serenade you and other guests, and there are demonstrations of palm weaving and after-dinner games.

Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina

One of Fiji’s original resorts and proudly Fijian owned, Musket Cove has been welcoming guests since the 1970s. Within 162ha (400 acres) of tropical gardens, the 55 air-conditioned villas are separated into adults-only and family-friendly areas. If you need a kitchen, book one of the island bures; they sit on a private isle and have a shared pool and barbecue area. Musket Cove can probably also lay claim to having the most extensive amenities, with poolside cabanas, a swim-up bar, jogging trails, bars, a supermarket, a dive centre, fishing trips and a full-service marina and yacht club.

DuaDua Beach Resort

DuaDua Beach Resort opened in November 2018, making it one of the newer properties in Fiji. The villas, swimming pool, restaurant, private beach and marina sit on 4ha (10 acres) of a grassy hillside. Inside the five villas, the decor is more city chic than island rustic, with leather and dark woods. It restaurant menu includes a continental buffet breakfast, à la carte lunch and speciality buffet evenings from the executive chef. Order the catch of the day.
