Librería Luna Nueva (librería being the Spanish word for bookshop) is found on a lively street in the old town and is a place for the true book-lover. The store’s tranquil atmosphere and comprehensive stock, from classics to the latest novels, encourages slow, careful browsing. It has an especially good selection of children’s books and also arranges lectures and readings by leading Spanish authors.

2. El Labertino

Shop

Located on a narrow, winding street in the heart of old Jerez, El Labertino offers a wide range of titles across all genres, which are displayed in a spacious and light-filled interior. Customers here consistently rate the service, as staff leave you to browse in peace but are friendly and knowledgeable if you do need assistance. The store has particularly good sections on art and local history and culture.

3. Bomarzo

Although located about a 20-minute walk out of the historical centre, book-lovers will want to check out Bomarzo: some locals say it’s the best bookstore in Cádiz province, let alone in Jerez. An impressive range of titles is stocked across all genres, from classics and philosophy to cooking and poetry. Bomarzo’s staff are charming and passionate about books, making shopping here a pleasure.

4. Planeta ZOCAr

Located a short stroll from Jerez’s Moorish Alcazar, Planeta ZOCAr is a secondhand book-lover’s dream. An improbable number of secondhand titles are crammed into its chaotic interior, which is presided over by a friendly proprietor. You might well need his help in searching for a book, as there’s no classification system to speak of here, but then, that’s part of this store’s old-school charm.

5. La Luna Vieja

Shop

Another great store for libros de lance (as secondhand books are also referred to in Spanish), La Luna Vieja can be found in the flamenco neighbourhood of San Miguel. It sells a superb selection of used titles at hard-to-beat prices, but what really sets this store apart is its programme of cultural events: ranging from photography exhibitions to ceramics workshops, they make this a place that every artist in Jerez will want to visit.

6. El Arbol de las Palabras

If you’re in Jerez as a family, don’t miss out on El Arbol de las Palabras (The Word Tree): situated on a pretty cobbled street in the centre, this is easily the city’s best kids’ bookshop. In its well-organised interior you’ll find an extensive selection of titles for young children and teenagers, as well as games, stationary and toys, all at competitive prices. Super-friendly staff and colourful displays make it even more fun to visit The Word Tree.
