Salzburg's 10 Best Bars To Visit
Despite its reputation for being quiet and quaint, Salzburg has a surprisingly lively nightlife. Here’s our pick of the top spots for a great night out.
1. Monkeys Cafe.Bar
Bar, Contemporary
Located on Imbergstrasse, which runs between Kapuzinerberg (a small hill) and the city’s river, this bar is the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or beer on a sunny afternoon or while admiring the view of Salzburg’s Old Town from across the water at night. Outside, there is a wooden deck area that acts as the ultimate people-watching spot. Although it’s on the steeper side of the price range, don’t be put off – on a warm afternoon, when the sun is shining, it’s the place to be. Furthermore, it has recently become smoke-free due to new government regulations.
2. Steinterrasse
Bar, Boutique Hotel Restaurant, Contemporary
Another bar that boasts fantastic views over the city skyline and the surrounding Alps, this classy venue attracts a diverse crowd made up of both tourists and locals. Located on the top of the elegant Hotel Stein, it is a great place for enjoying a relaxed evening with a cold drink and wonderful views. There is a wide range of cocktails, beers and wines on offer as well as some tasty bar snacks.
3. Jambo World Music Cafe
Bar, Contemporary
Cosy, colourful and inviting, Jambo World Music Cafe is perfect if you’re looking for something a little unusual or alternative. Boasting a vibrant record collection, with genres including Afro, Latin, Ska, Asian, Balkon and Tango, it is a honeypot for world music fans. Whether you want to sip on a glass of wine, a new beer, a tasty cocktail or even just a herbal tea, Jambo caters to everyone.
4. Sternbräu Sternlounge
Bar, Austrian
Neighbouring Sternbräu, the famous brewery in the heart of the Old Town, this classy wine bar is one of Salzburg’s more refined venues for an evening tipple. As well as a great range of drinks, Sternlounge also has a delicious menu featuring many Austrian specialties. Be sure to sample some Austrian wine – of which there are many varieties.
5. Watzmann
Bar, Contemporary
This venue, located along the city’s river, caters to Salzburg’s younger crowd. With a large sunny terrace and an extended happy hour, this is one of the best places for students to hang out on a Saturday night in the city. Wednesday is ‘funny evening’, an event that tends to be popular, partly due to the offer of €4.50 cocktails and ‘buy one get one free’ shots.
6. Alchimiste Belge and Beffa Bar
Bar, Austrian
Tucked away in a small street off the popular Linzergasse, these bars stand directly opposite each other. Both specialising in Belgian and Austrian beers, they offer a staggering 150 varieties, making lager lovers spoiled for choice. Despite being owned by the same proprietor, each possesses a different character; Beffa caters to the younger crowd while Alchimiste has more of a chill vibe, which attracts a diverse range of guests.
7. Republic Cafe
Bar, Contemporary
Cafe, bar, club and music venue, Republic Cafe is a jack of all trades. With countless themed evenings, performances by international and local artists and, of course, free-flowing drinks, it is a great place to end up on a Saturday night. Although it is fun during any time of year, it is perhaps best in sunny weather, when a lively street terrace opens. Situated in the heart of Salzburg’s bar district, it’s the perfect stepping stone for those wishing to party all night long.
8. Afro Cafe
Cafe, African
Bursting with colour and zest, Afro Cafe is inspired by all things African, with both decor and a lively menu reflecting the owner’s love for the culture. Open until midnight on the weekend, this cafe is a great place to have a relaxing drink with friends. As well as their African lager, Dju Dju Palm, there is also a variety of Austrian beers, prosecco and the Afro Sprizz, made with prosecco, soda, and homemade strawberry-mint syrup.
9. Jazzit
Bar, Contemporary
10. Gastlokal Fridrich
Bar, Austrian
If seeking a refined evening, look no further. Gastlokal Fridrich is a sophisticated and stylish venue in which to sample a glass of Austrian wine (which you’ll discover is one of the most underrated varieties in Europe). With the choice of hundreds of bottles from Austria and all over the world, there’s a wine for every taste.
