Puppy Paradise: Only Dog Owners Can Live in This Danish Building
Imagine a stylish apartment where dogs aren’t just allowed but in fact are an essential criterion for renting the place. Now take this imaginary apartment, place it in Denmark, add 17 more apartments and you’ll have a full picture of Hundehuset building.
‘Dogs are not allowed’ is a phrase that those looking for a home in Denmark often see on a house rental ad. Finding a place to rent in Denmark is quite difficult already, let alone when you have a pet.
Entrepreneur Niels Martin Viuff, who is well aware of the situation, took matters into his own hands and created a building solely for dog owners. Hundehuset (The Dog House) will be located in Frederikssund in North Zealand and will consist of 18 apartments specially designed for hosting the owners’ beloved four-legged friends.
Viuff turned to The Danish Kennel Klub, Denmark’s largest association for dog owners, for advice on how to make the apartments comfortable for both humans and dogs. The latter suggested that the apartments should feature floors made of tough and easy-to-clean material with a bathing area in the garden.
In an interview with The Local, the organisation’s behaviour consultant Lise Lotte Christensen praised the concept and expressed the members’ enthusiasm to follow the project’s development.
The only requirement in order to apply for a home at Hundehuset is that dogs must weigh a maximum of 99 pounds (45 kilograms) and Viuff must meet potential renters’ dogs before signing the final contract.
More than one small dog, as well as cats, will be allowed in the apartments. Viuff also told Ritzau that an apartment complex for cat owners is on the drawing board.
