Despite the temperatures dropping well below -25°C (-13°F) and getting fresh layers of ice and snow almost daily, Montreal is a great city to celebrate New Year’s Eve because of the sheer frenetic energy of the city’s residents as they shake off their cabin fever. Here’s a sample of the wide range of NYE events you can choose from across Montreal.

Montreal en Fêtes: New Year’s Eve Party in the Old Port

If you’re not interested in hitting up the crowded clubs for bringing in the New Year, then head over to the Old Port for some fireworks, ice skating, and live outdoor performances. There will be pea soup, tourtière, pouding chômeur, and candy offered around the Bonsecours Market. This fun, family-friendly celebration attracts up to 70,000 people, and this year is bound to be extra lively as it’s the last event commemorating Montreal’s 375th anniversary.

Velvet Speakeasy

La seconde avant minuit is an exclusive NYE event hosted by L’Auberge St-Gabriel, in collaboration with a couple of other big names in the Montreal nightlife scene. If you want to avoid the cold and the crowds but are still looking to celebrate in the Old Port, this is the event for you. For CAD 165, you can enjoy a fancy meal as well as the subsequent sultry soirée, or spend $40 for the soirée alone. DJs include Christian Pronovost, JoJo Flores, and Cabana & Senduiz.

Hit up the clubs

Of course, one of the most popular ways to ring in the New Year is to head out into the dark sub-zero weather and head into one of Montreal’s many clubs. Here’s a listing of some of the most popular NYE clubbing events around the city.

Celebrate the new year in a nightclub

Spectacle Blues

For a musical way to bring in the New Year, try some blues-rock at the old-school Bistro à Jojo. It’s one of the top blues venues in Montreal, and this year, its New Year’s event will start at 10:30 pm. The bar will be open until around 3 am. You can buy your tickets here.

Comedy Nest

For a hilarious night out, you can celebrate NYE at The Comedy Nest with Joe Machi, as seen on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and Comedy Central, along with special guest Daniel Tirado. There will be party favors, a countdown with the comedians, and a complimentary glass of champagne at midnight. The show is bound to sell out, so get your tickets ASAP.

Murder Mystery Dinner & Dance

Participate in a murder mystery for NYE! With doors opening at 8 pm, L’Atelier d’Argentine is hosting a unique evening that includes a cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, and party favors. During the cocktails and dinner, seven professional actors will be dispersed incognito among the guests until the mysterious murder begins.

The Dome

Join around 300 partiers under the Satosphere dome of the Société des arts technologiques. There will be a techno/house lineup of DJs, as well as hip-hop. Admission ranges from $30 to $100, depending on whether you want to stay on the ground level, head into the dome, or experience both and have free sparkling wine all night.
