While visiting the Hudson Valley in New York, which stretches from the northern tip of Manhattan to Albany, choose to stay at a family-run B&B, or check into a traditional inn near points of interest like the Bear Mountain State Park, Storm King Art Center and Kaaterskill Falls. Here are some of the best to choose from.

1. Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast

Originally built by Irishman John Caldwell in 1802, this Hudson Valley inn remains proud of its rich heritage two centuries later. The games room is stocked with a Victorian melodeon and backgammon, the three-course breakfast comes with an Irish blessing on the menu and the tranquil rooms are named after important Irish locations. Better still, Loughran’s Irish Pub is right next door, so you never need to go far for a night out.

2. The Arbor Bed and Breakfast

Get away from it all at the Arbor, an idyllic country retreat in the hamlet of High Falls owned by horticulturist and garden designer Nancy Greenwald. Rooms are bright and airy with shared bathrooms and no TVs. A breakfast of fruit, eggs and coffee is served at a communal table. Guests are welcome to wander the immaculate garden bursting with blooms. Hiking and climbing trails at the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park are just minutes away, too.

3. The 1850 House Inn and Tavern

Packed with vintage decor and evocative black-and-white photography, the 1850 House transports guests back to its 19th-century heyday without compromising on sleek, contemporary interiors. Foodies are well catered for, too, with hearty breakfasts served on the shaded deck overlooking the river, and a popular restaurant dishing up melt-in-the-mouth crab cakes and indulgent mac and cheese smothered in truffle oil.

4. Inn the Woods Bed and Breakfast

Harrison and Valarie Losey have run this charming B&B tucked into woodland in Hyde Park for 16 years, and it shows. With just two guest rooms, nothing is too much trouble – from the home-made honey at breakfast made by beekeeper Valarie, to the stack of books available on the local area. Stay long enough to explore properly and spend happy days visiting antique shops, pick-your-own orchards, museums and wineries.
