Culture Trip goes backstage with Brøgger, one of Copenhagen’s most talked-about labels, to speak with the designers about the spring/summer 2019 collection and get an insight into what it’s like on the day of a runway show.

Brøgger was founded by Julie Brøgger and Linn Norström Weile in 2016 and the initial focus was on outerwear that could be worn in all seasons, cities and climates. Now the collection spans all ready-to-wear categories and is loved by the Danish fashion industry for its signature pastel-hued, block colour designs and playful sensibility. Embracing colour, experimentation and diversity in its collections, Brøgger, as shown by these exclusive backstage photos, captures the unique atmosphere of Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Culture Trip: What inspired the collection this season?
Julie Brøgger: I took inspiration from the two influential Margrethes in my life: the Danish queen, Margrethe II, and my mother. The collection draws from memories that I have of both women from my childhood. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s I admired the Queen’s theatrical splendour and my mother’s ladylike glamour. She taught me that boardroom feminism could co-exist with red nail varnish and a slip dress.

CT: What does the morning of the runway show entail for you?
JB: I don’t have any superstitious rituals or specific things that I have to do so it’s just finalising preparations really. I spend the morning checking every single piece and outfit with my assistant and we make any final touches that might be needed.
Linn Norström Weile: I work with the production and PR agencies to co-ordinate set build, backstage set-up, music, the seating plan and all of the event logistics. There are a lot of interchangeable details that need to be kept on top of.

CT: What are your three main essentials for the day?
JB: A needle and thread, my phone and plenty of Diet Coke.
LNW: My phone, my charger and coffee.

CT: How would you describe the hair and beauty looks for the show?
JB: We’ve kept them simple and natural. We wanted to celebrate the models who we have cast, their diverse aesthetics and the features that make them unique.

CT: Talk to us about the model line-up.
JB: We worked with Scoop Models to put together a diverse cast with strong, distinct looks. We have included some well-recognised Danish names like Juliane Grüner, as well as a few street casts to add something new and directional to the group. We also have two fantastic male models in the line-up this season.

CT: How would you describe the atmosphere backstage pre-runway?
JB: Energetic, excited, a little chaotic but fun.

CT: What is your favourite look in the collection?
JB: Look 18 is my favourite. It’s a contrasting violet and purple suit with a silver lamé wrap top and a big dramatic bow. It is inspired by both my late mother and the Queen’s silver wedding jubilee outfits. It made my dad cry when he first saw it.
LNW: It’s tough to choose. I love the colour block suit that we have chosen for the opening look, the all-white suit worn by Daniel and all the green pleated looks.
