Each year around June 23rd and 24th Catalonia and other regions of Spain prepare for a night of celebrations on the eve of the Dia de Sant Joan, known as the Nit de Sant Joan. On the evening of the 23rd bonfires are lit, music and traditional performances such as correfocs and castellers take place and of course, large firework displays are set off everywhere. Here’s our pick of the seven best places in Barcelona from which to admire this spectacular pyrotechnic display.

Barceloneta Beach

Natural Feature

This is the most popular place for people to gather on the eve of Sant Joan and a sure-fire way to be at the heart of the party. There will be live music performances, dances and more as the sun sets and the party gets into full swing. Not for those who don’t feel comfortable in crowds, it’s advisable to get there early if you want to secure a spot on the beach to lay your blanket on. Alternatively, the local restaurants and chiringuitos (beach bars) usually put out extra seats and tables on this special night.

Located on the margins of the city, in the Carmel neighborhood of Barcelona, this former military bunker, in use during the Spanish civil war, is today a popular hangout for those looking to enjoy one of the best views of Barcelona without the crowds overflowing in the city center. From there you can enjoy a clear 180-degree view of Barcelona, the perfect place from which to admire the show in full. [jwplayer noXX07KY-RnIdcM25]

The Mirablau restaurant

Perched on the side of Tibidabo hill, beneath the iconic Tibidabo Amusement Park and basilica which sit atop it, the Mirablau restaurant is a great place from which to get a bird’s-eye view of the city and admire the fireworks in a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, head next door to the Mirabé restaurant.

Plaça de Carlos Ibáñez on Montjuïc

With a long history as a strategic viewing point over the city, Montjuïc hill is a popular place from which to admire the city from above and avoid some of the crowds in the city centre. There are many spots where you can enjoy great views on the hill by simply bringing your blanket and setting up your own private spot: the Passeig de Miramar is home to a number of grassy banks, as well a small number of benches on the Plaça de Carlos Ibáñez from which you can admire the view of the entire city.

Restaurante Torre d'Alta Mar

Market, Restaurant

Not your usual restaurant, this up-market establishment is located at the very top of one of the cable-car towers in Barceloneta, offering spectacular views of the city and the sea. The restaurant has a sophisticated menu composed of both traditional dishes and modern twists, using some of the finest ingredients of the Mediterranean. Be sure to book in advance and request a window-side table for this very special evening.

La Caseta del Migdia

Restaurant

This little-known outdoor restaurant is a favorite summer hangout among locals, situated on the very top of Montjuïc hill, just behind the old fortress. Offering a simple menu of barbecued meats and salad, La Caseta del Migdia has a friendly, laid-back atmosphere perfect for a relaxing evening with friends. Although it looks out onto the industrial port of Barcelona, it’s a great spot to soak up the festive atmosphere of Sant Joan and celebrate in a true local style.

A Friend’s House

Yes, that’s right, one of the most popular for locals to spend the Nit de Sant Joan is at a friend’s house… if it comes with a rooftop terrace or balcony. Barcelona is home to a large number of apartments with terraces and balconies so it’s always more than likely that at least one of your friends has a great spot from which to admire the fireworks. Be sure to bring a coca de Sant Joan and a bottle of cava to secure your invite next year.
