Medellin isn’t just full of great markets and lovely boutique shops; it’s also home to some wonderful fashion brands and designers who are taking Colombian fashion and style to a whole new level. With pieces inspired by Indigenous cultures, local flora and fauna, and traditional weaving and sewing methods, there’s something to suit all tastes. So here are seven fashion brands from Medellin that you should know.

Innata

Innata specialises in beautiful bespoke jewellery pieces, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings. With a range of diverse pieces inspired by Indigenous cultures and boho-hippy fashion, Innata is a perfect brand for anyone looking to style themselves at that hard-to-reach intersection between traditional and modern.

Andrés Pajón

One of Medellin’s top luxury fashion labels, Andrés Pajón has been operating for almost 10 years and is inspired to create beautiful, glamorous pieces by the brightly-coloured tropical vibes of Colombia. With their elegant Medellin fashion boutique – where you can even make private appointments to get styled by the experts – this brand is the one to look for if you’re after elegant clothing and a unique style.

Oropendola

Named after an iconic Colombian bird that weaves elaborate domed nests, Oropendola, naturally, specialises in handwoven designs fusing Indigenous and traditional weaving techniques and fabrics with a more contemporary edge. Their unique handwoven necklaces are real statement pieces and are sure to stand out wherever you sport them.

Entreaguas

A swimwear brand with a strong social conscience, Entreaguas specialises in swimwear and beachwear, all created by local artisans. The real selling point of purchasing an Entreaguas bathing suit is that the money you spend goes into the Entreaguas Foundation, set up to help support the lives and wellbeing of these artisans. The pieces are handmade and gorgeous, and truly one of a kind.

MAKUA

Another brand fusing contemporary designs with Indigenous patterns and techniques – this is clearly a thing in Medellin fashion – MAKUA works primarily with two Indigenous communities in Colombia: the Embera Chami and the Kuna or Guna Yala people. The Embera specialise in embroidery with colourful beads, while the Kuna are known for their incredible reverse appliqué sewing methods. MAKUA works with artisans from these groups to create unique and lovely jewellery pieces.

MAKUA pieces are inspired by, among other things, the work of the Kuna people

Tigre de Salon

A brand that makes fashionable bags and backpacks, Tigre de Salon works only with natural leather and employs no dyes or alterations during the process. With every item produced in Colombia, by hand, these bags are truly one-of-a-kind pieces and make the perfect statement piece to complement the traditional jewellery produced by the other brands on this list.

LOOPZU

Stylish socks with a tropical twist: that’s LOOPZU! A completely Colombian product entirely manufactured by single mothers, these socks make the perfect gift from Medellin. With plenty of wild, colourful patterns and images of classic Colombian motifs, these socks are like no others you’ve ever seen before. With pineapples, flamingos, bananas, toucans, palm trees, jaguars, and much more, LOOPZU is a perfect brand to add that stylish finishing touch to any wardrobe.
