An immense collection of color and history, from medieval times to the Baroque period, Alte Gallerie is set in the amazing Eggenberg Castle (which is surrounded by a gorgeous park with live peacocks running free!). An exhibition of relics and religious treasures, with special shows staged two or three times per year, along with educational programs for children: this is what the Diocese Museum has to offer. The displays allow you to investigate the church’s history and better understand the evolution of the Christian Church. Kunsthaus is the place to head for if you are interested in the world of contemporary art. Opened in 2003, the building itself has become an attraction in Graz. It is often referred to as the ‘Friendly Alien’ due to its weird shape, and it is certainly an iconic landmark within the city. The exhibition shows contemporary art pieces from the 1960s onward, from both the Austrian and international art scenes.

This newly renovated building makes a great home for contemporary art, especially since here it is not only the artwork which is important, but also the environment in which it is placed. The setting seems to breathe life into the art, and this homage is strongly tangible. Here you can also take part in art: the series of ‘An Art Day’s Night’ on Thursdays provides interactive evenings with artist talks, lectures and performances, each of which helps you to understand the art on display that much better.
