Durban is pretty much a surfer’s paradise, known for laid-back residents who spend their weekends strolling along the beach promenade or enjoying the city’s many restaurants. However, one thing Durbanites do enjoy is a good night out. Here, Culture Trip recommends the top tourist-friendly clubs to visit.

Cubaña

Situated on Durban’s popular Florida Road, Cubaña provides you with an “all-inclusive nightlife experience”. There is a lounge area for early birds who want to enjoy a meal and a cocktail or two. As the night progresses, you can hit the dance floor, where a live DJ plays local genres, such as gqom (a type of electronic music) and kwaito (similar to house), and international hits. Here, the food and drinks are a little more expensive than most places, but you won’t be disappointed.

ORIGIN

Boasting three dance floors (each with different music) and four bar areas, ORIGIN has become one of the most popular nightclubs in Durban. There’s a diverse age range, and the club hosts many themed evening events. Top South African DJs often appear, and occasionally, international acts perform at the club, too. It also has promotional specials on alcohol, and there’s a members-only bar area, which has its own music and lounge suite.

Tiger Tiger

As one of the most spacious and largest nightclubs in Durban, Tiger Tiger tends to host large, popular events with brilliant drink specials and enjoyable music. It’s situated in a prime spot near the Moses Mabhida Stadium, where it’s easy to grab dinner before a night of clubbing.

Crush Nightclub

Crush Nightclub is about a 45-minute drive from Durban, in the sleepy seaside town of Ballito, which has some great hotels and shops. The beach is also a winner. Crush Nightclub has hosted a range of popular events, from New Year’s Eve celebrations to street parties, and partygoers love it for its music, great bar service and positive vibes. It’s a hugely popular club and one to consider if you decide to spend time north of Durban.

Rocca Bar

Considered one of the city’s friendliest and safest nightclubs, Rocca Bar has long been a popular destination for those who want to have a casual, relaxed night out. It’s known for its affordable drink specials, feel-good music and quick access to mobile food trucks that are only too happy to feed hungry clubbers. The club also hosts monthly theme nights.
