Situated 20 minutes from the CBD, the laidback village of Harfield in Claremont, Cape Town is packed with gastronomically cool restaurants and cafés. Once a year, around April, the village hosts a carnival bringing out the area’s best food vendors, live music and shopping. If you’d like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Harfield Village is a great addition to your itinerary.

1. Brad’s Grill

Brad’s Grill is a southern suburbs institution and one of Harfield Village’s most loved family restaurants. In fact, it’s renowned as one of the best steakhouses in Cape Town, having won several awards for their succulent steaks. The restaurant boasts a welcoming, laidback ambiance with friendly staff and excellent service. On the menu you’ll find a variety of salads, starters, poultry, seafood and of course, steaks, all complemented by quality local wines. Try the pepper fillet or chocolate chili fillet drizzled in a decadent dark chocolate sauce with a chili bite! There are various specials to try, the most popular being ‘in by 6, out by 8’ where you have a choice of sirloin steak, chicken schnitzel, or calamari served with a side of your choice for only R80! Friendly Brad is always on hand to ensure his patrons are well-looked after and enjoying their visit.

2. The Avenue Restaurant & Grill

The Avenue Restaurant & Grill is run by father and daughter team, Tony and Farah Mason, and situated in 2nd Avenue on the popular restaurant strip of Harfield Village. The restaurant is known for its mouthwatering steaks basted in the Mason family secret recipe before being grilled to perfection. Their menu includes starters, salads, seafood, vegetarian dishes, gourmet burgers, line fish, and steak, all of which are well-priced and great value for money. Round off your meal with one of their decadent desserts; the triple chocolate cheesecake is a must-try! The interior of The Avenue features dark wooden furniture accented by rich red walls, while pictures of old cars, wheels and hubcaps complete the unique look. During the evenings, patrons are serenaded by local musicians on guitar, adding to the relaxed ambiance of the restaurant.

3. Sakura

Situated in 2nd Avenue, Sakura is a family-friendly Chinese restaurant serving a range of sushi platters, salads and traditional dishes. Popular menu items include well-priced sushi platters, chicken or beef fried noodles and dim sum. Their portions are quite generous and food is tasty so they’re definitely worth a visit if you’re a fan of Chinese.

4. Fat Harry’s

Fat Harry’s offers a variety of wholesome meals ranging from tapas and seafood to steaks and homemade gourmet burgers. The gastropub is situated in a large warehouse-like space featuring bare brick walls, a high beamed ceiling, wooden tables, and a long bar. A wide selection of local and international craft beers are available on tap or by bottle to pair with your meal. There’s also an extensive wine list showcasing top quality Cape wines. Stop by for a Happy Hour drink between 5pm and 7pm daily, and enjoy live music from Wednesday night onwards.
