Ifrane, Skiers' Little Switzerland of Morocco
Ifrane is a popular year-round destination for Moroccans, as it is so different to everywhere else in the country. It’s located near Fez and Meknes and people love coming here, as it truly resembles a Swiss alpine village, with red-roofed houses, lake-studded parks, white winters and blooming flower beds.
Ifrane is a very cold area of Morocco. Even in the summer the temperatures stay low, and the lowest temperature ever recorded in Africa was here in Ifrane, with -24°C (-11°F)! Usually, when people hear snow, they don’t necessarily associate it with Morocco, but Ifrane has an amazing ski resort that will delight skiers and families!
The Michlifen Ski Station is located about ten kilometres (6.2 miles) from Ifrane, but is very easy to get to, either by car or by taxi (which should cost around €3). The facilities are open to all, prices are affordable (you can rent skis for €5 for a couple of hours, or €20 for the whole day) and you can even get on the ski lifts for as little at 30 cents!
Near the station, you can find The Michlifen Resort, a 5-star hotel that is absolutely gorgeous, the newest and most popular in the region. Of course prices are on the higher end (one night for two people costs around €200), however it is definitely worth a stay, at least for one night, to get the full ski resort experience.
The resort has three amazing restaurants, a European one serving tasty French dishes, a Moroccan restaurant, for those wanting something more local and traditional, and a café. All three range between €10 and €30 per head and offer high-quality food. If you’re looking for a place to eat in town, the most popular café is Café La Paix, where you can get a delicious tagine or a large pizza. Ideal if you’ve just spent the day building a snowman with your loved ones!
