Explore the Charm of This Lesser-Known Neighbourhood in Morocco
This small neighborhood, near the Twin Center of Casablanca, is like a little village within the city. Gauthier has a variety of pubs and restaurants, ranging from Irish to Indian, art galleries on every corner and, most importantly, open-minded people.
Places to stay
The most incredible place to stay in Gauthier is Boutique Hotel Gauthier, a picturesque hotel with great décor and fabulous architecture. Although prices do tend to be a little bit more on the pricey side, it is definitely worth a stop, at least for a drink at the bar.
A slightly cheaper option would be Hotel Barceló Casablanca. It’s located in a tall building at the intersection of Boulevard d’Anfa and Mohamed Zerktouni, which gives the rooms an incredible view of the city, and from which you can see the mosque Hassan II a couple of kilometers away.
Things to see
Art galleries are a big part of the cultural scene in Gauthier, and the best ones are Galerie H and Laredo Art Gallery (LAG).
Galerie H is a traditional art gallery with Moroccan furniture and rare local craftsmanship. It aims to promote Moroccan designers and help people discover the country’s amazing handicraft.
Located nearby is LAG, where stunning paintings are displayed all over the walls. With huge, street-facing windows, the whole space is full of light, and passerby can enjoy the art from outside.
Another great location is Synagogue Beth-El and, although Casablanca has more than 30 synagogues, this is by far the most symbolic. Its stained-glass windows, massive chandeliers, and amazing architecture make it well worth a stop.
Food and drink
The best thing about Gauthier is the variety of food.
The Irish Pub is a small, cozy place where you can enjoy a drink in a relaxed atmosphere that truly feels like Ireland. Here, you can savor their specialty: a full Irish breakfast.
If you’re not really feeling the Irish vibe, you can go for Salsa Mexican Grill, an incredible Mexican fast-food restaurant that is not only cheap, but really, really good. You can enjoy a large chicken burrito here for 43 MAD (£ 3.40), and many other delicious dishes that will leave you licking your fingers.
There are so many restaurants and bars in Gauthier that are really cozy and chilled, so if you’re walking by a nice little café, do not hesitate to enter.
Shopping
La Boutique de Mimi is a little store located near Salsa Mexican Grill, which has amazing clothing pieces totally suitable for Morocco. There are stylish blouses, dresses, comfy trousers, and kaftans, all for a really good price.
Another amazing place is Jungle Concept Store, which sells modern and original furniture and homeware. It also has great paintings and chandeliers if you are looking for something different, but within budget.
