Casablanca is the most expensive city in Morocco, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing but expensive, fancy restaurants to choose from. Here are the 10 top cheap eats to seek out in the city when you need to find something to eat that doesn’t break the bank.
Tacos de Lyon is a new concept that arrived in Morocco only a couple of years ago. Originally from France, these tacos are absolutely not like the regular Mexican ones: they consist of a pitta bread stuffed with anything you want, such as chicken nuggets or chips. Here, you can enjoy a full meal with chips on the side and a drink for only 42 MAD (£3.30).
Moumni is a Moroccan fast-food restaurant that serves all types of dishes. Here, you will be able to satisfy every palate at a fair price, with pizzas, sandwiches, pasta and even barbecue dishes for as little as 25 MAD (£2). You will be able to find these small restaurants in every neighbourhood you visit in Casablanca, so they are very accessible, and they will even deliver to your home.
This place makes some of the best shawarmas in Casablanca. It was opened more than a decade ago by a couple of Syrians who wanted to introduce their culture to Morocco, and since then, everyone knows Cham. The prices for a single shawarma start at 20 MAd (£1.50), and they are absolutely delicious, made with authentic ingredients that shine through with every bite.
Snack Amine is a popular seafood and fish restaurant in Casablanca. Here, you can try some of the best affordable fish dishes in town, with fast service and friendly staff. If you order a tagine, you will pay 65 MAD (£5) and have an endless supply of bread until you finish the dish. Try their delicious mint tea with your tagine.
This is a great option for sushi lovers, as Sushi Club is a Japanese fast-food joint with many shops across the city. Here, you will find eight pieces of sushi with a drink priced at 60 MAD (£4.70), pizza sushis, makis, sashimi and soups. The service is very quick and the food is amazing.
For Mexican food, the best affordable spot in town is Tex Mex, located in one of the best neighbourhoods of Casablanca. This restaurant opened more than 10 years ago and is a popular option among Moroccans, with burrito meals for around 50 MAD (£4). You can order a beer to go with your food, as they also serve alcohol.
If you are craving French sandwiches, Pomme de Pain is the place to go, serving the most delicious French baguettes. They make sandwiches with the best smoked salmon or chicken, and they cost only 40 MAD (£3). You can also opt for one of their incredible desserts, such as yogurt with red berries or white-chocolate tart.
If you are looking for cheap Italian food in Casablanca, this is the ultimate spot. At Lahbib Pizza, you can enjoy a good-sized, delicious pizza starting at 30 MAD (£2.40), as well as pasta and salads. It is located in the neighbourhood of Bourgogne, and people walk from all over Casablanca to get here, as it is very popular.
You will find this restaurant in several locations in Casablanca, and it is mostly popular among families. At La Grillardiere, you can enjoy all-meat dishes, with beef sandwiches, chicken and pasta, pepperoni pizza and more. Usually, a sandwich costs around 35 MAD (£3) and a drink 10 MAD (£0.80).
If you fancy Lebanese, this is the perfect place to go for a decent affordable meal. This is a franchise with restaurants all over Morocco. It is slightly more expensive than Chawarma Sham. At Fayrouz, you can try the most delicious falafels, hummus, baba ganoush and chawarma, with nothing exceeding 35 MAD (£3).
