Agadir is a popular and lively seaside resort in southern Morocco. Situated alongside the Atlantic Ocean, it is also known for its several great surfing spots and its (relatively) energetic night scene. Whether you’ve visited Agadir to relax and unwind or to get active and have diverse adventures, enjoying a traditional Moroccan steam bath, known locally as a hammam, could be a great addition to your stay. Here are some of the top places in Agadir to indulge in a hammam experience.

1. Talborjt Hammam

The neighbourhood of Talborjt has many cafés, restaurants, shops, homes, and traditional facilities, such as an authentic neighbourhood hammam. Located inside a purpose-built traditional steam bath building, this is one of the best hammams in Agadir for an authentic experience. It wasn’t opened to serve tourists and is a popular facility for local residents. Cheap to enter, you can pay an attendant to scrub your body with a special black soap and exfoliating glove.

2. Hammam Charaf

Another local hammam in Agadir, Hammam Charaf is in a largely residential area in the Charaf Quarter. Close to Charaf Garden, it’s tucked away down a small side-street; ask a taxi driver, a local on the street, or at your hotel for precise directions and they’ll point you in the right direction. Serving mainly locals, the hammam does now see a few tourists who are looking for a genuine and traditional steam bath experience. Split into two levels, the lower section is most in keeping with an authentic Moroccan hammam, while the upper level offers several added luxuries, like massages and skin treatments.

3. Najah Hammam

Mosque

Located a couple of streets away from Najah Mosque, Najah Hammam is a neighbourhood steam room frequented by locals. Hammams don’t get much more authentic than this! Be sure to take your own soap, gloves, flip-flops, towel, and change of underwear with you. While the attendants are not likely to speak English, they will generally do their best to give you a terrific local experience.

4. Coeur de Nature

Spa

With a name that means Heart of Nature, Coeur de Nature is a family-run spa with a hammam. It has a fairly basic appearance, but the treatments are always highly rated. Unlike several spas around the city, you can pay just to soak and scrub in the hammam if you like. Many visitors opt to have a soothing massage after their steam session for the full-bliss package. The spa also sells a range of organic products and items made from argan oil.

A great option for couples, Argan Palace has a private hammam in addition to the larger communal hammam. While the communal hammam is separated into different areas for people of different genders, couples, friends, and family members can enjoy a traditional experience together in a private facility. Couples can also share a room for the massage following the steam bath. Various massages are available, including those special for pregnant women, foot massages, and those said to aid with slimming efforts. As the name implies, visitors can also buy a range of argan oil products to enjoy at home.

One of the most luxurious spas in Agadir and part of a high-class resort, Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea & Spa is especially known for its soothing seawater treatments. A top place for pampering and well-being, the beautiful hammam cleanses your body, mind, and soul. A traditional scrub and wash is part of the package, plus there are various massages to indulge in too, and top-quality products like argan oil, prickly pear, and rosewater are used to make skin glow. Other onsite facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness centre, relaxation zones, and yoga areas.
Many hotels and guest houses around Agadir have hammams for guests to use, and some are also open to members of the public. Be sure when planning a trip to a hammam, especially a public hammam, to check the opening times for males and females.
