It is uncommon for many households in Kenya to have dessert after a meal. But this does not mean Kenyans do not gratify their sweet tooth syndrome. Ice cream, in particular, is a guilty pleasure for many. This led to the emergence of ice cream shops dishing out all manner of customised and crafted ice creams. Dessert spots have become an alternative daytime hang-out joint when it is too hot for a cup of tea.

Cold Stone Creamery

This is one of the new ice cream joints in town. It is taking Nairobi by storm. In the city centre, it is strategically located on the busy Mama Ngina Street. There are probably a few reasons pertaining to its popularity – first, they serve ice cream in a freshly baked waffle whether it is a cone or a bowl. Second, their array of ice cream flavours is tantalising. These can be combined with fruits of your choice, nuts or sweets. Third, they do not just have ice cream on their menu, they also have equally eclectic yogurts, sorbets, smoothies, milkshakes, cakes and (surprise!) cocktails.

Fior Di Latte

Fior De Latte is located in the plush suburb of Lavington. This is a true farm-to-table experience. They have a farm in a different posh suburb, which supplies them with all their raw materials. They have specialised in gelato production in true Italian style (which is amazing by the way) using fruits of the season. Besides gelato, they also have an assortment of sorbets and gelato cakes. Yum! If you are in the mood for a pint, their frozen cocktails – mojito, piña colada, passiontini and old fashioned – will do the trick.

Planet Yogurt

Planet Yogurt is the pioneer – and the only shop – that specialises in frozen yogurt, a healthy dessert treat. All their yogurts are natural with fresh fruit toppings. They already have more than 20 yogurt flavours, and more are in the pipeline to keep their customers coming back for more. Some of their fruit toppings are unique to them. Their shops are found in the Village Market, the Junction Shopping Centre and Galleria Mall.

SNO Cream

SNO Cream is the oldest ice cream spot in Kenya. It opened its doors in the 1970s and has managed to keep it retro-style to date. It is located on the upper side of town, making it a somewhat secluded destination. It has also been praised for producing great ice cream that is affordable.
