Although not yet renowned for its cuisine, the selection of restaurants and cuisine in Ghana is constantly increasing. The capital city of Accra is already home to Japanese, French, Spanish and African-themed restaurants. Here we highlight ten of the best.

Santoku

For innovative Japanese cuisine in the heart of Africa head to Santoku. The restaurant is contemporary both in design and cuisine, and guests can choose to dine at the long bar or sit at a more private table. Chefs from the famous Nobu London worked with Santoku’s chefs to create the vibrant, unforgettable menu of seafood, tempura, sashimi and crisp salads. Try Santoku’s signature dish of pan-fried scallops with foie gras and orange tobiko or go for the teriyaki pork belly with ginger ponzu aubergine. Santoku is also popular for its brilliant cocktail bar and intimate terrace, making it a great restaurant choice for a lengthy dinner or romantic evening.

Le Must

A French restaurant decorated with Ghanaian colors, Le Must serves top quality dishes in a beautiful, spacious setting. Stop by to try the set menu that changes daily and is available Monday to Friday. Choose the chicken fricasse with seafood, the grilled chateau-briand fillet steak or the lobster thermidor for a delicious and succulent meal. Le Must also hosts live music events every Thursday evening.

Buka

A truly African restaurant, Buka serves a variety of fusion dishes from Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Nigeria and Senegal. Diners can relax on the outdoor terrace and watch their choice of meats and fish being grilled in the open-air, or shelter from the heat in the air-conditioned indoor restaurant whilst enjoying fresh coconut milk. Buka is decorated in neutral colors, with furnishings made from woven bamboo giving it a truly authentic feel. Try the fresh fish soup, jollof rice, grilled guinea fowl and fried plantain for a scrumptious feast to share between two or three.

La Chaumiere

For fine French cuisine with a touch of North African spice head to La Chaumiere. The set up here is particularly good for families and groups of friends. There is a wide choice of dishes available, including classics like French onion soup and Nicoise salad, and more innovative dishes like grouper with harissa and mint yogurt. La Chaumiere also boasts a full bar with expert bartenders.

Toro

The first tapas bar to open in Accra, Toro is an authentic Spanish restaurant serving incredible paellas and tasty tapas. Stop by on a Thursday evening to listen to live music whilst feasting on beef in blue cheese, spicy garlic prawns and aubergine chips. There are also plenty of drinks to choose from to keep the atmosphere lively, including delicious sangria and great mojitos. Toro is situated within the Afrikiko Complex, but there is an indoor seating area too for those after a quieter night.

The Republic

No trip to Accra would be complete without a visit to The Republic, where you can sample some indigenous Ghanaian dishes and listen to traditional music. This revolution-themed bar serves up a wide mix of cocktails that are made using local spirits as well as an abundance of authentic dishes at really affordable prices. It’s not unusual for patrons to pour out onto the street in front of The Republic to have a dance as the evening turns into night. Try the hibiscus cocktail for a refreshing alcoholic beverage and remember to bring cash as they don’t accept credit cards.

Firefly

Perfect for both romantic dinners and party nights, Firefly is a lounge, bar and restaurant situated in Accra’s lively entertainment district, Osu. The menu is a fusion of Mediterranean cuisine including a variety of tapas and pasta dishes, salads, and heartier mains such as stuffed chicken breast, steak medallions and calamari. There is an extensive drinks menu to complement the food. Warm chocolate fondant and homemade tiramisu are highlights of the dessert menu, so make sure indulge in a sweet treat before leaving. As the night continues and the party really starts, expect an eclectic mix of underground house music, afrobeat, indie, disco and hip-hop.
