There’s much more to Hollywood than the Walk of Fame and the iconic sign – spreading over about 5mi (8km) from east to west, it includes East Hollywood, where communities from countries as diverse as Armenia and El Salvador coexist among trendy cafes, and brushes up against neighboring West Hollywood, LA’s famed gayborhood. If you’re looking to explore but don’t want to stay in the more touristy hotels, here are some of the best vacation rentals near Hollywood, bookable via Culture Trip.

1. Modern meets classic at Applewood Silver Lake

This classy-but-not-ostentatious house is on the eastern side of LA’s super-cool Silver Lake area, on a quiet street just 2mi (3km) out from East Hollywood. We’re talking the type of family home that’ll really make you feel part of the neighborhood. It has two bedrooms and can sleep up to six (including sofa beds). With lots of white broken up by colorful feature walls and artwork, it’s an appealing mix of modern and classic; and with free parking, a full kitchen and a yard, it also has all the necessities.

2. Tripbz Mello Lofts, for pool cool

This trio of apartments oozes the kind of industrial chic that Downtown Los Angeles is known for, with high ceilings, tall windows, a little bit of concrete and some wide open spaces. Both one- and two-bedroom apartments are available, with sofa beds in the living room for extra guests. The apartments have modern kitchens and laundry facilities in open-plan living spaces, and the building has a gym and a glamorous outdoor pool with chairs and a barbecue. The downtown location gives easy access to many cool haunts, and Hollywood is a 15-minute drive or subway ride away.

3. Penthouse living in New Downtown LA Luxury Jr. Penthouse

Staying here, you’re on the very edge of Downtown LA, right next to the historic Westlake neighborhood, known for MacArthur Park. This property has two spacious apartments that sleep six or eight. They have a modern-penthouse ambience with pristine white walls and views of the city, but with some soul as well, thanks to the addition of colorful velvet furniture and a few floral prints. With full kitchens, laundry and 50-inch smart TVs in both apartments, it’s easy to feel at home, but you can also get to trendy Downtown LA or busy Koreatown within minutes, and Hollywood is around 5mi (8km) away.

4. Next to Four Seasons Hotel Luxury Apartment

Apartment

Here’s a homey one-bedroom apartment with a sofa bed (an extra rollaway is available on request) that’s a solid bet for small families or groups. Expect an open-plan kitchen and living room with balcony, hardwood floors and vintage lamps that combine to create a soothing atmosphere; a TV, dishwasher, laundry facilities and wifi are all included, as is parking. With its location – just east of Beverly Hills, 1mi (1.6km) from West Hollywood and 2mi (3km) from the Sunset Strip – this place is just perfect for exploring all corners of Los Angeles.

5. The Stradella Court Mansion, for big-group get-togethers

You’ll want to bring a group to this ritzy rental: it has seven bedrooms, decked out in vintage furniture evocative of Hollywood’s golden age. It’s a real mansion, with stone columns, an airy atrium and sprawling rooms for socializing (or just lounging idly), plus all the necessities like a full kitchen. It’s perched high in Bel Air, so while it’s not particularly close to central Hollywood (10mi/16km away), it also has sweeping views of the Santa Monica Mountains, best enjoyed from its hacienda-inspired tiled outdoor patios.

6. Minimalist magic at Chantilly Estate

This one is also a luxurious mansion, but with architecture that hints at Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown, it’s less classic and more of a sleek, hyper-modern kind of place. Inside, it’s a minimalist affair with lots of pristine white surfaces, silver appliances and floor-to-ceiling windows, with splashes of color from pop art and Hollywood-inspired prints and paintings on the walls. With seven bedrooms, it’s good for groups – even better when you consider the infinity pool and spa on premises.

7. Peace and quiet at Sanborn House

Guesthouse, Independent Hotel

Not every Hollywood vacation rental is a flashy mansion: for a more affordable option, there’s the charming Sanborn House, where two rooms are available in a classic Californian wood-paneled property. Both have queen beds and private entrances, and parking is included. Pick the larger of the two suites and you’ll get a living room, too. The kitchen is communal, as are the house’s garden and porch. And the location? Away from the Hollywood hustle in a quiet corner where East Hollywood blends into hip Silver Lake, with plenty of restaurants and bars close by.

8. The Bel Air Treehouse, for villa vibes

If you’re looking for a slice of glamorous Bel Air life that doesn’t involve renting a whole mansion, then consider this seven-room bed and breakfast. True to its name, it’s housed in an upscale wooden property tucked among serene greenery; many rooms have a modern-yet-natural feel with hardwood floors and natural textures, while others have a Mediterranean-villa vibe; size-wise, most bases are covered, from couples through to a three-bedroom suite for families or groups. Breakfast and parking are included; the B&B is just 2mi (3km) from UCLA but about 10mi (16mi) to Hollywood.
