A bustling metropolis, Frankfurt is a city of two sides. Historical attractions are a stone’s throw from the buzzing financial district, and a glinting, glass skyline exists alongside Medieval buildings. At the same time, there’s more to Frankfurt’s foodie scene than sausages and schnitzel. The meat-free movement has taken the country by storm, and a swathe of plant-based eateries are elevating this German city’s gourmet game. Here are eight vegan and vegetarian spots to know.

1. savory

This friendly café is exactly what your local neighbourhood spot is like – except everything it serves is vegan. The personable staff will immediately make you feel at home whatever your dietary requirements are. With everything made in house, you can feel confident that whatever you order will be vegan. The menu has a gentle junk-food vibe, with cupcakes, burgers and hot dogs on offer. There are plenty of pastry options for the sweet-toothed. Very affordable, savory is a great place to while away a few hours.

2. Seoulfood

Cafe, Restaurant, Food Stand, Korean, Asian

A niche hole-in-the-wall Korean restaurant, this little spot is the kind of place you always wish you could find but never do. The menu is wide-ranging and includes all your favourite classics with a vegan twist. You can even build your own bowl of bibimbap customised to your taste (don’t forget to ask for extra sauce). The staff will help you find the dinner of your dreams. Best of all, it’s open until 10pm, making it perfect for those late-night cravings.

3. Aroydee

Restaurant, Thai

Just because you’re in Germany and vegan is no reason not to be able to eat fabulously authentic Thai food. Aroydee provides exactly that. The delicious-sounding menu contains items that can be hard to find outside Thailand, and best of all, they’re completely animal-product free. Prices are low, and portions are big, so tuck in.

5. Vevay

Restaurant, Vegan, Vegetarian, Healthy

For hearty, healthy fare in the heart of the city, look no further than this vegetarian spot. A favourite with plant-based locals and tourists alike, Vevay offers a farm-to-table concept and serves up a variety of creative, vegetable-laden dishes. Start your day with an energy-boosting açai bowl, feast on falafel burgers for lunch, indulge in a slice of vegan cake, or get a vitamin fix from the ever-changing juice and smoothie menu. Vevay is a cash-only restaurant, but the food is surprisingly affordable – a main course and drink won’t set you back more than 20 euros.

6. Lebe Gesund

Cafe, Deli, Vegan, Vegetarian, Healthy

If you find yourself strolling through Frankfurt’s old town, Lebe Gesund is worth a visit. While there is a small seating area, this healthy-eating hotspot is more of a deli – shelves are laden with home-made pesto, vegan spreads and gluten-free grains, and a mouthwatering array of freshly baked goods (the majority of them vegan) can be found at the counter. Pick up a green juice and a refined-sugar-free cookie and watch the world go by, or stock up on plant-based treats for a picnic in nearby Metzler Park.

7. Cafe Metropol Am Dom

With views of St Bartholomew’s Cathedral and a legendary menu of indulgent breakfasts, home-made cakes and a dizzying array of vegan and vegetarian dishes, it’s no wonder Cafe Metropol has become a local hotspot. The all-organic menu is served from early until late, but we recommend heading down on the weekend to sample the vegan brunch, which has the potential to convert even diehard carnivores. An impressive selection of craft beers and regional wines also make this a popular post-work destination.

8. Beetroot

Cafe, Vegan, Vegetarian, Healthy

Tucked away in a quiet area of the city, Beetroot serves up vegetarian light lunches, cakes, home-made lemonade and organic ice cream. The menu is small but changes daily – expect colourful soups, tarts, salads and plenty of vegan options. The café itself is also on the smaller side, so be prepared to queue, but orders can be made ahead of your visit and made to take away. Monthly supper clubs, which take place on the last Friday of every month, are a great way to connect with like-minded locals and travellers.

If you’ve been inspired by these places making fantastic vegan food in Frankfurt, why not check out other cities Lufthansa flies to? San Francisco has veggie options galore, and Rome is so stuffed with delicious pastas and fried vegetables that there’s no chance you’ll be missing out on anything.
