Capital of the prosperous southern Brazilian state of Paraná, Curitiba is the gateway to the Serra da Graciosa mountains and the lush rainforests, islands and long beaches around Paranaguá Bay, all reachable on a spectacular mountain train. While most city visitors are in transit, there are a few sites worth visiting to while away an hour or two. Among them is the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, with striking buildings by the celebrated architect. There’s a good choice of hotels in Curitiba, too. These are, for our money, the best – all bookable on Culture Trip.

This modern Curitiba check-in, overlooking the Linha Verde urban highway, is well situated for rapid access to downtown, the airport and the interstate freeway. Whitewashed, floor-tiled rooms offer simple comfort, with work desks and picture windows overlooking the Linha Verde or a woodland park behind the hotel. Explore and you’ll also find a rooftop pool, a simple gym and a restaurant. There are more dining choices in the small adjacent food mall and in the city center, a 20-minute drive away.

Grand Mercure Curitiba Rayon, for sweeping spaces

In the heart of the downtown district, an easy stroll from Praça Rui Barbosa, is this tall, distinctive Curitiba favorite. Step in and admire the grand marble lobby, dotted with mirror-faced tables and glittering with chandeliers. The modern bedrooms are decorated in calm shades of white and beige, with large work desks and snugly fitted wood-effect furniture. Check out the spa, the bar and the two restaurants (including an award-winning Japanese) and don’t rise late – breakfast is included in the rate.

Three Little Birds, for proximity to the Botanical Gardens

Guesthouse

This homey little guesthouse hotel lies on a residential street next to Bosque de Portugal park, 15 minutes from the center, and the Botanical Gardens and Oscar Niemeyer Museum are 10 minutes away by cab. Drive for 15 minutes and you’ll be rewarded with a choice of restaurants and bars. Back at the Three Little Birds, rooms and suites (with kitchenettes) are decorated in Arts and Crafts wallpaper, with tartan coverings on the beds and views over a lawned garden. Prepare to make friends, as guests share a living room and eat breakfast together in the dining room.

Pousada Betânia, for peace and birdsong

This tranquil Curitiba hotel run by an evangelical Christian association feels countryside-tranquil, yet it’s only 15 minutes from the central business district. Rooms are simple, with a palette of muted colors or creams set over floor tiles. Stay here to be amid peaceful wooded parklands strung with hammocks and dotted with playing fields, and to enjoy a soundtrack of birdsong. Restaurants and bars, and the Régis Bittencourt highway (for interstate and airport access), are a five-minute cab ride away.

Ibis Styles Curitiba Batel, for crisp good looks

Chain Hotel

The appeal of this centrally located Curitiba hotel lies in its spick-and-span chain-hotel levels of comfort. Rooms (with ensuites) are modern and well maintained, and the nightly rates are very competitive. Some spaces have fitted workstations, and a few are accessible for those with access needs. There’s a good choice of restaurants on Dr Pedrosa Street, immediately outside the lobby, and dozens more within a five-minute walk. Good news if you’re driving – the hotel has on-site parking.

NH Curitiba the Five, for the spa

This well-located downtown Curitiba hotel combines corporate-cool services with a touch of boutique style. Rooms appeal with their contemporary light-beige palette offset by warm woods and crisp whites, and geometric abstract art adds a touch of style. But it’s the public areas that truly stand out – witness the generous al fresco sundeck lounge with its cityscape view, the Japanese-minimalist restaurant with its Zen garden and the soothing spa, offering saunas as well as massages and other treatments. Staff can even help with Serra da Graçiosa train bookings.

Novotel Curitiba Batel, for Peruvian food

Hotel

In a city where many hotels feel airport-inn anonymous, the Novotel does its darnedest to be cozy. Bedrooms look the part, all repro woods with muted tones and walls dominated by evocative shots of European cities. Beds are pool lit for intimacy, and bathrooms are attractively faced with polished stone and have efficient walk-in showers. There’s a kids’ club and babysitting service, and the excellent hotel restaurant serves good Peruvian food. Fancy a change? There are more options in the nearby city center.

Bourbon Curitiba Convention Hotel, for national dishes

Curitiba hotels with a pool are hard to come by, but the Bourbon saves the day with its heated indoor beauty, plus a well-appointed gym and spa with a sauna. There’s a celebrated restaurant, too, serving one of the best feijoadas (the meat-and-beans national stew) in southern Brazil. There’s an impressive spectrum of room categories, from standard superiors in eye-catching polished woods, to more modern and luxurious premier suites, with fitted carpets, 400-thread-count linens and jacuzzi baths.
