Wander 2km (1mi) into town for buttermilk pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup at Maina, or walk east to find cellar doors aplenty and lots of green space for four-legged companions to roam. If you want to reconnect with nature, Mangarara Eco Lodge is the place to do it. This self-contained lodge sits among 600ha (1,483 acres) of native forest and farmland, 45km (28mi) south of Hastings. Hosts John and Di describe their studios and two- and three-bedroom cottages as fur-baby friendly – and they certainly love animals, if the petting paddock filled with happy pigs, sheep and alpacas is anything to go by. There’s plenty of space to roam on this 4ha (10-acre) plot, and the cafes and wine bars of Havelock North are just a 20-minute walk away. Visit nearby Telegraph Hill Olives to sample some of the tastiest olive oil in New Zealand.

Jacuzzi baths, big beds and space for your critter – this family-run motel in Havelock North has all the essentials. Hip cafes and restaurants are a short walk from your studio. Book a table at Mary’s for fresh oysters and local wine – it’s run by the same folks behind Craggy Range, a vineyard that’s also worth a visit (and only 10 minutes away by car).
