Travelling with a furry companion? If a dog could design the perfect holiday destination, it might just be Hastings, New Zealand. Luckily, the region’s long mountain walks, sun-soaked beaches and top-notch restaurants are human-friendly too, and you can all enjoy some creature comforts at one of these pet-friendly hotels in Hastings – bookable on Culture Trip.

These pet-friendly apartments on the outskirts of Havelock North have plenty of room for a pet or two, with studios and one- and two-bedroom options – just let your hosts know you’re bringing them in advance. Wander 2km (1mi) into town for buttermilk pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup at Maina, or walk east to find cellar doors aplenty and lots of green space for four-legged companions to roam. Round off the day with a poolside barbecue.

Mangarara Eco Lodge

If you want to reconnect with nature, Mangarara Eco Lodge is the place to do it. This self-contained lodge sits among 600ha (1,483 acres) of native forest and farmland, 45km (28mi) south of Hastings. The lakeside lodge has five bedrooms – sleeping up to 17 – and room for pets, if you let hosts Greg and Rachel know in advance. Tour the farm, meeting pigs, cows and chickens. Kayak by day, stargaze with a barbecue by night and feel the stress-busting powers of Mother Nature.

Equidistant from Hastings, Havelock North and Napier, these six self-contained, dog-friendly cottages are named after local flowers and plants. They’re also mere moments from a pretty pebble beach. Hosts Janie and Craig have every little detail covered – from a super well-stocked kitchen to complimentary mozzie spray. On Sundays, pay a visit to Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market – it’s one of the best in New Zealand.

Ace High Motor Inn

These good-value studios and family apartments are just off the state highway. You’ll have use of a barbecue, a swimming pool and a kids’ playground, and pets are welcome if you can trust them to steer clear of the beds and curtains. Wondering how to fill an afternoon? Head into Napier to spot ocean-themed murals and art deco wonders, or tour the vineyards at Church Road and Mission Estate wineries – both are just a five-minute drive away.

Cottages on St Andrews

Hosts John and Di describe their studios and two- and three-bedroom cottages as fur-baby friendly – and they certainly love animals, if the petting paddock filled with happy pigs, sheep and alpacas is anything to go by. There’s plenty of space to roam on this 4ha (10-acre) plot, and the cafes and wine bars of Havelock North are just a 20-minute walk away. Visit nearby Telegraph Hill Olives to sample some of the tastiest olive oil in New Zealand.

Village Motel

Jacuzzi baths, big beds and space for your critter – this family-run motel in Havelock North has all the essentials. Hip cafes and restaurants are a short walk from your studio. Book a table at Mary’s for fresh oysters and local wine – it’s run by the same folks behind Craggy Range, a vineyard that’s also worth a visit (and only 10 minutes away by car).

KEEN TO EXPLORE THE WORLD?

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
