Surrounded by high cliffs, Tamarama in Sydney, Australia is a beautiful little suburb right on the ocean. Frequented daily by dozens of joggers and fitness fanatics, delightful cafes have popped up on and around the beach. Here are the best for brunch.

Barlovento

This tiny local spot is nestled away on the Bondi/Tamamara border of Fletcher St. During the day it is a Spanish themed cafe, in the evening it transforms itself into a romantic candle-lit wine bar and in the late mornings it is the perfect place for a lazy brunch. Huge outdoor blackboards list their food and drink consisting of filling all-day breakfast, bircher muesli, eggs, muffins and excellent coffee. For lunch they have Latin-American-style huevos rancheros and chili con carne as well as wonderful pizzas made on the thinnest tortillas. Barlovento is a great relaxed place for waking yourself up slowly in the morning.

The ‘Tama’ cafe, as it is known by locals, sits right on the edge of the beautiful Tamamara Beach. It is really an upmarket kiosk, and is the only food or drink outlet on the beach. Here you will be offered all-day breakfasts, healthy salads, sandwiches, burgers, pies, freshly squeezed juices, good coffee and ice cream. Armed with your sustenance, take a well earned break from your Bondi to Coogee jog. Relax and sit yourself down on the large deck and gaze out over the azure ocean.

M Deli Café

Nestled away from the beach fronts on a sunny corner, this place is frequented by the Bondi to Bronte beach jogging and power-walking crowd, looking to refuel. Also popular with less sporty locals, M Deli Café is renowned for its excellent organic coffees and delicious, local breads from Iggy’s Bakery in nearby Bronte. For the health food junkies among you, try their delicious cereal of brown rice soaked in milk with seeds, nuts, dried fruit and fragrant spices, topped with yogurt. Or if you are looking for something more filling, go for a decadent poached egg, smoked ham and Hollandaise sauce roll – an innovative eggs Benedict to go. There are also lots of organic smoothies and milkshakes made with fresh fruit, and organic, gluten-free sandwiches and salads for lunch. A few tables can be bagged both inside or out. Never mind if they are all occupied: just order takeout at the counter and head for the beach.

Ruby’s Diner

About 2km back from the beach, is Ruby’s Diner. You cant miss it with its pale blue, modern shop front. At one end, the glass doors slide back for indoor/outdoor dining on a warm day. Inside, colorful murals by a local artist line the walls. This is an extremely popular place for a weekend hangout, so be prepared to queue. The staff are friendly and efficient and the menu has all you would want for a healthy, filling breakfast or brunch. Try the spiced buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup, bagels from Iggy’s Bakery filled with ocean trout, poached egg and rocket. The health-conscious will find smoothies, coconut quinoa bircher and sugar- and gluten-free muffins. Meanwhile, the single-origin coffee is superb.

Bondi Icebergs Terrace Café

Technically at the southern edge of Bondi Beach, but located just around the headland from Tamamara on the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk is this new little sister of the iconic Icebergs Restaurant in Bondi. It occupies a spectacular position: on a large balcony terrace, dotted with white picnic tables and parasols. This place offers up unbeatable views of the beach and ocean. Now it has been discovered, it has become incredibly popular for its fresh and healthy breakfast, brunch and lunch menus which offer something for everyone. Planning a workout later? Try their wholesome house protein shake. A vegan looking for a cuppa-joe? Ask for some of their delicious coffee, available with soya or almond milk. Fill up with breakfast paninis or organic egg frittata with sweet potato. Their delicate lunches consist of healthy broccoli salads with organic poached chicken, smoked ocean trout or feta cheese. Prices are very reasonable for such a trendy upmarket place.
