This Washington state city, on the banks of its namesake river, will get your artistic nature flowing. Head down to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture to discover local talent or, if you’re more the singing type, wind your way through historic Downtown and past the Spokane falls with songs of hometown hero Bing Crosby ringing in the air. Stay at one of these hotels in Spokane and leave energized to pen your own poems, prose or performances – the neighboring Selkirk mountains might perhaps serve as a source of inspiration.

1. The Davenport Tower Hotel

On business? On holiday? On a hike? This Autograph Collection hotel, in Downtown Spokane, has you covered. Never miss that important late-night international meeting thanks to the 24-hour business center, safe in the knowledge you won’t be disturbed, and take solace in knowing the fitness center also runs around the clock. After hiking the nearby 30mi (50km) long Centennial Trail, relax in the heated pool and jacuzzi, freshen up in your marble shower, and indulge in cocktails at the Safari Room Fresh Grill and Bar.

2. The Historic Davenport Hotel

Fancy living like a royal for the night? This 100-year-old hotel will take you on a journey through the 20th century. Feast like a king or queen in the opulent dining room, tucking into the Crab Louis Salad – the signature main, named after hotel founder, Louis Davenport, and first made a century ago. Post-dinner, settle in front of the fire in the Spanish Renaissance lobby, order a whisky, and set eyes on hand-painted frescoes and a gold-leaf hearth. To feel like a true monarch, take a regal waltz through the Hall of Doges, the oldest and most exquisite ballroom in Spokane.

3. Montvale Hotel

Planning on catching a show in Spokane? Pack your glad rags, memorize the soundtracks and be at the theater doors in a few minutes from the Montvale. You’ll be close to the best shows in town with the Fox Theatre, the Montvale Event Center and the Bing Crosby Theatre all within walking distance. Before heading out, make the most of the daily happy hour and enjoy an old fashioned at the Sapphire Lounge.

4. The Davenport Lusso

Luxury is in the name at this Spokane hotel – literally via the Italian word lusso – and, with oil-on-canvas paintings and hand-carved cherry-wood furniture on arrival, the hotel lives up to its claim. Make the most of your location in the vibrant arts district and get yourself to one of the art galleries right on your doorstep – maybe the Kolva-Sullivan or Terrain gallery – or mix a glass of vino and local art at the Barrister winery. Back at the hotel, soak in your European-style bath before crashing out on your king-sized bed.

5. Hotel Indigo Spokane Downtown

This vibrant and colorful hotel, in the entertainment and arts district, reflects the area. You’ll immerse in locally influenced design and décor, with huge murals plastered across bedrooms, demonstrating the creative history and talent of Spokane. Take in the local flair over a French Intervention cocktail at the Magnolia American Brasserie, before returning to your four-legged friend, who’s invited to stay for an additional fee.

6. Mirabeau Park Hotel & Convention Center

Being a little further from Downtown doesn’t mean you’ll miss out when staying at the Mirabeau Park Hotel. In fact, you’re spoiled for choice with numerous green spaces just a few blocks away: take a drive out to Iller Creek and tread those mountain trails or go lakeside at the Liberty Lake Regional Park. The theme of serenity continues at the hotel, where you can grab a drink from the bar, and watch the stars from the quiet courtyard.

7. Spokane Club Hotel

Downtown Spokane might demand you for meetings in the business district, rounds of pool and live music at dive bars or to spend the afternoon at Riverfront Park, showcasing the second longest urban waterfall in the US. You’ll be in the thick of it all at Spokane Club Hotel, where the Champagne Suite affords you space to sprawl out across a living room and king-sized bed. When not out and about, make the most of your spacious digs, ordering club burgers on room service from the 1910 Restaurant, Bar and Patio.

8. Hotel Ruby

Still in love with the Swinging Sixties? This motor inn turned boutique hotel takes you back to a time when the Beatles were top of the charts and JFK was setting out his stall for a new America. You won’t miss this Downtown hotel with its four giant murals of musicians playing their saxophone and guitars, and its neon hanging signs. If music’s your thing, catch a gig at the Spokane Arena or Knitting Factory Concert House nearby. You can stay at the Hotel Ruby for (almost) Sixties prices, too.

9. Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Spokane

Pull back your curtains, step onto your balcony and seize the day at this Courtyard by Marriott, with front-row seats to the winding Spokane River. Packed your sneakers? Take to the Centennial Trail, tracing the river. When back and in need of that morning caffeine hit, stop at Starbucks in the lobby, before enjoying a selection of fresh fruit, avocado toast and eggs, just how you like them, at the bistro.

10. Oxford Suites Spokane

If you fancy a night in, whip up your own grub in the kitchenette or grab a burger or steak from the Osprey restaurant next door.
