The Menger Bar, built in 1859, counts Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders as some of its most famous patrons. The grand hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, boasts Victorian-era decor and museum-grade furnishings in its suites – many of which showcase views of the Alamo. Dogs up to 40lb (18kg) can stay at this pet-friendly hotel for a $125 fee. While they can’t be left alone, there’s an on-site Spanish courtyard garden, and you’re adjacent to the River Walk.

Two cats or dogs – weighing no more than 50lb (23kg) – are welcome at this hacienda-style hotel on the River Walk. You’ll need a valid credit card on file, and there’s a cleaning fee of $125. However, your pets can be left alone, if crated, while you explore San Antonio. The Four-Diamond hotel dates back to 1853 and has a Spanish feel, with wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles and a heated pool in the fountain courtyard.

Your cat or dog can also be left unattended in a crate while you’re out enjoying Mokara’s rooftop pool, a seafood feast at its award-winning restaurant, Ostra, or a tranquil treatment at the spa. The St Anthony, known as the first luxury hotel in Texas, is a landmark building that’s hosted prominent ranchers and politicians since its conception in 1909. It’s been extensively refurbished but retains an old-world feel, with ballrooms, marble columns and an antique piano. As for its pet policy, the hotel charges a $100 fee for up to two dogs weighing up to 40lb (18kg), and you’ll be given pet beds and bowls at check-in, along with directions to nearby Travis Park for walks and toilet breaks.

Named for the American war hero and Alamo defender Davy Crockett, this 1909 hotel celebrates all things Texas. Expect views of the Alamo when you open the plantation shutters in your room, Texas-shaped waffles at breakfast and fiery local whiskeys and microbrews at Ernie’s Bar. For a $60 fee, up to two pets – cats or dogs – are welcomed at the Crockett Hotel with treats and bowls, and there’s a grassy relief area on the property.
