Zelko Bistro, in a picturesque little cottage located on 11th Street, is home of the classic southern dish: shrimp and grits. There are countless reasons why this bistro is considered noteworthy, and it’s hard to pin down just a few. For starters, they use locally grown food and they are very eco-friendly. Their dishes are inventive, original, and finger-licking – like the St. Arnold’s short ribs marinated in root beer. And who could turn down the Captin’s chicken, lightly coated in yogurt-buttermilk and Cap’n Crunch cereal? The staff is attentive and friendly and make the place entirely enjoyable.

Lola

Lola, located on the corner of Yale and 11th Street, is a diner that offers not only organic, but also vegan options. The atmosphere is as lively and colorful as the food they serve. The ‘day after Thanksgiving’ sandwich is a must-try option here.

Home of the Fried Avocado Taco

Torchy’s Tacos

Torchy’s Tacos, on 19th, may not necessarily be a breakfast and brunch joint, but they do have ‘damn good’ breakfast tacos that are worth mentioning. The jalapeño sausage breakfast taco is loaded to the max with cheese, eggs, and a little kick added to the sausage. Torchy’s originally started out as a food truck based in Austin and, fortunately, brought their delectable fare to Houston.

Dry Creek Café

On the corner of Yale and 6th Street, Dry Creek Café is Onion Creek’s relatively quieter sister, offering up good beer and brunch cocktails. Black Walnut Café

Nothing is better then a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice at the Black Walnut Café on Memorial Drive. Try the hearty lobster Benedict with breakfast potatoes, as well as the juicy, grilled chicken croissant with a side of sweet potato fries. Save room for some creamy gelato on the way out.

5512 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 713-868-1800

Down House

Down House

Located on Yale Street, Down House creates a comfy atmosphere with dim lighting and a vintage touch. What’s really great about Down House is that they take phone numbers and call or text when a table is ready; in the meantime, take a walk around 19th or unwind on a bench outdoors if the weather’s nice.

1801 Yale St, Houston, TX 713-864-3696

Shade

Don’t throw shade on Shade, the classy and sophisticated restaurant on 19th Street. Even with newer establishments opening up all around, Shade is continuing to flourish, and it’s not hard to see why. The staff is amiable, and always knows what wine to pair with the food. Speaking of which, they don’t skimp out on champagne in the mimosas. The food is just as great as the service, with their eggs Benedict, fried shrimp and bacon grits, and the best french toast covered in fresh fruits. Don’t forget to grab a chocolate croissant before heading out.
