It’s only about a half-hour drive from the glitzy high-rises but The Colony is really a whole world away from downtown Dallas. Named after the historic Peters Colony in a bid to channel the original pioneers’ spirit, and designed as a dream city, this mostly residential area is indeed a dream, with an abundance of parks and trails for enjoying the great weather here on the shores of Lewisville Lake. There’s plenty to do here – not to mention easy day trips to one of Texas’ buzziest cities – but to find a homebase, you first need the best hotels to book in The Colony, Texas.
Just off the Sam Rayburn Tollway, this pet-friendly hotel is the perfect base for the sports lover in you. Walk your dog on the trails of The Colony Five Star Complex across the street to the north and catch a ball game while you’re at it – baseball, football, softball, soccer tournaments are held here on the regular. Then grab a bite to eat and a pint of local brew at the popular 54th Street & Drafthouse before cooling off in the hotel pool. End the day by curling up with your pup while watching another game on the flat-screen TV in your room.
The cheery seating and gaming areas will make you want to hang out, shoot some pool and share that pizza that you ordered in. But keep that for a rainy day or when you’ve overdone it the night before. After all, you’re across the street from a sports complex that boasts five baseball fields – and that’s just the baseball. When the sun starts sinking below the horizon, sate your hunger with a slab of blackened ribeye and a frozen margarita at 54th Street & Drafthouse – it’s within crawling distance.
Not many hotels in this part of The Colony feature on-site, full-service restaurants serving a decent mix of build-your-own burgers, grilled salmon, steaks and other staples of the Texan kitchen. At this hotel, though, it gets even better – up to four kids eat for free. If they’re under 18, they stay for free too. But what if your babies are of the four-footed variety? No problem – the hotel is pet friendly and if you want to venture out without them, there’s a pet-sitting service just down the street.
Need – or want – to stay in The Colony for longer than a regular vacation? At this pet-friendly home-away-from-home, your suite has a kitchen equipped with everything you need to make lunch and dinner – breakfast is on the hotel. If you’d like to have a barbecue while the kids are shooting hoops or splashing in the saltwater pool with its toadstool-shaped fountain, there are grills outside from where you can keep an eye on them while the burgers are cooking. And unlike at home, someone else can do the washing up afterwards.
Many of The Colony hotels have outdoor pools that are open only in the warmer months. At this hotel, you can swim to your heart’s content even when the area experiences a cold snap – the pool is indoors and heated. Not that you’d want to spend all day in the water. After all, the hotel is in the Grandscape shopping and entertainment complex that is huge like they make ‘em in Texas. Everything from go-karting to virtual-reality adventures will keep you entertained while you work up an appetite for the myriad of eats.
Traveling with your pup? Then you not only want a pet-friendly place to stay but also places where you both can shop and eat. Mere steps from this hotel is Grandscape, where dog-friendly Scheels is just the place to pick up a toy for your good boy or girl. Several outdoor restaurants – including the beer garden that also houses Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum – welcome dogs too. After an exciting day out, relax next to the fire pit overlooking the pool before retiring to your cream-walled suite for a snuggle.
You’ve spent the day exploring the lakeshore trails about a mile away, did some laps in the indoor pool, went out to the Drunken Donkey Craft Bar & Grill next door for a pint of Velvet Rush and The Squealer burger and now you just want to relax. When you’ve had your fill of soaking in your own private whirlpool tub, you can curl up with your furry friend – it’s a pet-friendly hotel, after all – on your king-sized bed or the sofa in the generously-proportioned lounge area.
Don’t worry about trying to find an off-leash dog park in the area – this pet-friendly hotel has its very own, on-site, where your dog can meet other canine guests and burn excess energy. This is also one of the few hotels in The Colony with an electric vehicle charging station in the parking lot – with the RI Runs app, you can even find a curated route for a jog in the area. Rooms feature crimson statement walls and welcome splashes of contemporary art and you’re mere steps away from the popular Crab Station and Saltgrass Steak House chains.
