Perhaps the most literally named town that we’ve ever encountered, Seaside sits on the windswept rugged coast of America’s beautiful Pacific Northwest. In the same state as the hipster hub of Portland, some of the city’s artsy, homegrown, trendy vibes have spilled over into quaint Seaside, adding endearing, thoughtful touches to the ocean-facing hotels. Whichever you choose, you’re only ever a few sandy steps away from beachside fun.

Expect old-school seaside at the Hi-Tide. But, whether spring, autumn or winter, it’s always pretty beautiful at this quirk-filled Seaside stay stocked with instruments – in case you want to pen your own acoustic hit. The character-packed boutique hotel consists of a six-room villa, three rooms at the Victorian Lodge and three individual cabins, all with local art and some very much leaning into the Van Gough theme. It’s a friendly, social sort of place, with fire pits outdoors and an infrared sauna, too – perfect after blustery beach days.

Don’t worry, you’re not in a US teen movie: the Prom they speak of is the famous one-and-a-half-mile-long (2.4km) promenade that runs across the front of Seaside. This is the perfect central location, with downtown shops and family-fun-filled activities just steps away. Imagine if Urban Outfitters decided to open a hotel, and you’re close to the vibe at this uber-cool, laid-back spot that could only exist in Oregon. Front and center on the coast, the aptly named Ebb Tide places you on the doorstep of miles of pristine beaches, which provide the backdrop to a multitude of activities, such as bonfires, kite flying, beach volleyball, bike riding, castle building, razor-clam digging, surfing and, of course, long walks along the shoreline. Basically, a very busy afternoon. The bright, airy rooms are well equipped, and some have dramatic sea views.

Frankly, we’d be worried if the tides weren’t by the sea. Anyway, this place has a retro motel feel, with the addition of modern luxuries and a twist of contemporary design. Set among grassy dunes and only a short distance away from all the amenities and entertainment that Seaside has to offer, you’ll feel ensconced in this quiet, serene and secluded spot, with a range of condos available for rent.
