Greenville, one of the biggest cities in North Carolina’s Coastal Plains region, was ranked by Forbes as one of the best places for small businesses in the US. It’s therefore no surprise to find that there are many great places in eat in Greenville, NC, including a number of locally owned restaurants that focus on supporting local businesses. Here’s our guide to the best restaurants in Greenville.

The Scullery

The Scullery

The only word that effectively describes The Scullery is ‘local.’ They really make an effort to source ingredients locally and so their coffee, milk, and honey, among other things, are all from nearby North Carolina establishments. The Scullery may appear to be just a coffee shop, but the lunches and dinners here are also fresh and full of flavor. You might find southern biscuits and gravy one day, followed by tofu ramen-style soup the next, which pulls diners back time and again.

Starlight Café

The menu at Starlight Café showcases influences from all over the world, offering many things that would be hard to find elsewhere. Take their oyster bar that brings in oysters from the nearby coast daily and prepares them however the customer would like. Or the entrees, which range from Hungarian (the chicken paprika) to Cajun (Creole catfish) with several French and Belgian choices in between. Thanks to a creative bartender, their bar has become rather well known in its own right. This is one of the rare places that you can find Absinth in the US, and here you can trust that it will be served in the traditional fashion.

Sup Dogs

Sup Dogs Deck

Every college town needs a late night student choice and it’s hard to find a better one than Sup Dogs. Don’t jump straight to ordering one of the specialty dogs or burgers as the appetizers list is well worth some consideration. The bacon cheese fries are not to be missed and the nachos add a bit of local flavor as the chips are purple and gold, for the local East Carolina University. If you’re thirsty, sample the orange Sup Crush, a drink that combines fresh oranges and your choice of booze, or the Sup Swirl, a mix of frozen margarita and frozen sangria, will help you sail through those sultry Carolina nights.

B’s Barbecue

B’s is the definition of ‘old school’. They don’t have a phone, they only accept cash, the building resembles an old shed and they close every day when they run out of food. Yet a visit to B’s will get you some of the best Eastern North Carolina barbecue. Expect pulled pork with a peppery vinegar sauce, perfectly grilled chicken and delicious sides like coleslaw, beans, and potatoes. You do have to be careful about your timing. Tt’s so popular that it’s likely to be closed by 1pm on weekdays, even though they barbecue dozens of pigs every week. Going to B’s is like taking a trip in a time machine, and you will never forget it.

Winslow’s

While you can get delicious food at Winslow’s Deli, Tavern and Market, the real selling point is the selection of drinks. Winslow’s prides itself on having some of the most extensive beer, wine, bourbon and whiskey lists in the region. They have 46 taps, from which flows a different kind of American craft beer, including microbrews and seasonal specialties. The atmosphere is at once stylish and homely, with exposed brick walls and wooden beams. On nice days you can even have a seat on the quiet patio to enjoy your meal.

Cinnamon 419

Contrary to what the name suggests, this is not a bakery. Cinnamon is in fact only one of myriad spices that you’ll find here, as the establishment is an Indian restaurant. They have all the Indian favorites, such as samosas and pakoras for appetizers, a kebab sampler, various biryanis, a long list of vegetarian dishes and even meat straight from their own tandoor. They also make their own naan. Try the peshwari naan, which comes stuffed with raisins, nuts, and coconut.

Basil’s restaurant

Basil’s menu is replete with Greek, Italian, and New York-Italian options. Veggie-inclined visitors will find a sumptuous salad menu, while the carnivores will be happy with the selection of ‘infused burgers’ (burgers stuffed with cheese and other toppings.) Those wishing they were in Rome should go to the pasta and pizza choices. If it’s the Big Apple you want, check out the hot oven subs. For something really different, try the Chef’s features menu.

Anchalee Thai restaurant

Greenville might not seem like the most likely place to find authentic Thai cuisine, but that’s exactly what you get at Anchalee Thai restaurant. The interior is decorated with Thai elements, which only compliment the menu. Anchalee serves delicious curries and the chefs are happy to modify the spiciness of the dish to suit your fancy. They also take advantage of their proximity to the ocean with a number of exciting seafood dishes. They have a specifically vegetarian menu, and a separate dessert menu featuring a delectable sticky mango rice.
