The birthplace of the East Coast’s Beat movement, Greenwich Village is full of hotels that embrace New York City’s history and vibrant arts scene. Here are the best West Village hotels in one of the trendiest areas in New York, the West Village.

The West Village is both the fictional home of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw and the real-life home of Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the character in the cult TV series. That should give you a good indication of what to expect from this lively neighborhood, but if you haven’t seen the show, think leafy streets housing red-brick walk-up apartment buildings and the odd celebrity strolling down the sidewalk. To help you feel like the star of your own romcom, we’ve rounded up our pick of the best hotels in the area.

1. The Jane Hotel

In the early 1900s, this 14-story landmarked building housed sailors docking in New York City’s ports. The Jane Hotel still maintains its quirky aesthetic today. Antique lighting and brass hooks lend an authentic feel to the 50-square-foot (five-square-meter) rooms, but upgrade to a Captain’s Cabin for more space and an en-suite bathroom. Travelers can find further design inspiration in The Jane’s ballroom, outfitted with Oriental rugs, a disco ball and more.

2. Walker Hotel

The Walker Hotel’s facade is inspired by 1920s Georgian Revival design, but the experience provided by the hotel is timeless. Old-school amenities, including personalized wake-up calls, complimentary shoeshine service and newspaper delivery, are a specialty here. The Parlour cocktail lounge and curated Greenwich Village-themed library add to the Walker’s vintage feel. Tip: lean into the glamour by booking a room with a private furnished terrace.

3. The Marlton Hotel

This staple of the Village’s hotel scene transports guests to the mid-20th century when former lodger Jack Kerouac penned Tristessa and The Subterraneans at The Marlton. The on-site espresso bar, vintage-inspired crown moldings and oak paneling help recapture this period of New York City history. Even the hotel artwork by Berlin-based painter Stefano Castronovo is modeled after the work of Franz Kline and other mid-century Abstract Expressionists.

4. Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC

Chain Hotel, Spa Hotel, Hotel

Located at the edge of the West Village, Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC is a flashier alternative to its historic peers. Past the trendy lobby, complete with a pool table and bar, guests can discover 22 luxurious suites and 164 rooms. Booking any of these grants travelers access to amenities including a 45-foot (14-meter) heated outdoor rooftop pool, rechargeable suitcase boomboxes and custom cakes.
