The home of artists like Andy Warhol, NoHo’s unconventional character and rich architecture make for a splendid afternoon walk. Whether it’s live poetry readings, classical theatre screenings, or sublime shopping, this East Village neighborhood has something for everyone. Here are our curated picks of activities that will entertain any traveler roaming through this funky neighborhood.

Merchant House

A glimpse into the lives of a wealthy merchant-class family is put on display in one of the finest examples of domestic architecture from the mid-19th century. A National Historic Landmark, Merchant’s House Museum carries a vast collection of items from the Tredwell family, who lived in the house from 1835-1933. Visitors can explore the collections of furniture, clothing, books, and household items from the Victorian era. Be sure to explore the dresses and fashion accessories belonging to the Tredwell women. Tours are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Blue Man Group

Known for their energetic and bold blue characters, Blue Man Group performances combine live music, audience interactions, and comedy to create a multi-media sensory experience for both families and adults to enjoy. The show explores themes of creativity and curiosity, as animated texts run throughout the show. The Astor Place Theatre is the original home of the Blue Man Group and has led to one of the longest successful off-Broadway productions. Joe's Pub at The Public

Boosting an array of performing artists from Lady Gaga to Leonard Cohen, Joe’s Pub at The Public has been celebrated as one of New York City’s best venues for emerging and established performance artists. Since 1998, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theatre delivers a mission to support young artists and provide a space for established artists to develop new works of musical genius. Serving over 100,000 audience members annually, guests are treated to a variety of performances from Broadway actors to GRAMMY Award winners. On September 4th be sure to check out Somi, a talented East African vocalist and song writer who draws inspiration from African jazz and pop beats.

The Public Theater

Established by the visionary Joseph Papp in 1967, The Public has transformed the nature of theatre. Producing Shakespearean works along with classics, musicals, and experimental pieces, this nonprofit theater engages audiences both nationally and internationally with the creation of new works from emerging writers and under-represented talent. The Public also operates the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, where it presents the beloved summer tradition of Shakespeare in the Park free of charge. Joe’s Pub is located within the venue, and $20 rush tickets are available an hour prior to performances.

This contemporary art gallery represents emerging artist talent through offbeat exhibits and a variety of special events. Be sure to catch the Future Feminism exhibit, running from September 11th-27th. This lecture series and performance will act as a manifesto to artists and musicians representing strong feminist views and perspectives. Those who favor eclectic works of art must visit The Hole as part of their trip to NoHo.
