You’ve found yourself a real catch with this New York state hamlet. Best known for fishing, Montauk, which also goes by Fish City, has more saltwater fishing records than any other port on earth. Get your fill of fresh air from six state parks and, unusually for its northerly location, enjoy the sea breeze in a humid, subtropical climate while staying at one of these hotels in Montauk.

1. Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa

Resort, Spa Hotel

Sip cocktails while enjoying ocean views at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, the only hotel in the Hamptons directly on the beach – and a private sand beach, at that. Get the adrenaline pumping with watersports or lower your pulse with an ocean dip, before resting in front of your fireplace. Fancy a non-beach day? Make the most of the seawater steam rooms. Come evening, cook a delicacy in your kitchenette or head down to Scarpetta’s for a glass of vino and soulful Italian food.

2. Ruschmeyer’s

Boutique Hotel, Independent Hotel

Just a mile from the town of Montauk, this hotel is a great base to discover all the area has to offer. Once you’ve had enough of solid land, head out to Ditch Plains Beach to surf serious waves. Packing your days full will mean you really cherish kicking back in Ruschmeyer’s cozy cabins. There’s no chance of cabin fever, though – spend your evenings around one of the outdoor fire pits after a meal of local seafood or wood-oven pizzas at the restaurant.

3. Sunset Beach Motel

There are only 100 paces between you and Sunset Beach from this motel. Get down there for dusk to see the sunsets, among the best in the area. Elsewhere, catch the ferry to Block Island or simply spend the day working on that tan with a beer in hand. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, jump on a jet ski or paddleboard for fun in the sea. With that all provided, the only thing you’ll need to bring is yourself and a beach towel.

4. Daunt’s Albatross Motel

Motel

Spread your wings like this motel’s namesake and dive straight into the outdoor saltwater pool ahead of the local going-ons. A short stroll from Main Street, Daunt’s Albatross is well-situated for breakfasts at John’s Pancake House, and evenings spent knocking back cocktails and eating steaks at the Beach House Bar & Grill. Work it off with a walk on one of the nearby nature trails or make use of the free-to-use hotel bikes to see more of the area.

5. Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina

Resort

You’ll feel like an A-list star at this luxurious resort. Bring your best suits and gowns to shine in the waterfront ballroom before waltzing over to the restaurant, Showfish, for a taste of fresh Montauk fish. Enjoy views of the marina where cruisers and super yachts are moored and, if you’re lucky to own one yourself, make use of a space. A private beach and choice of indoor or outdoor pools is yours for the taking – though if you fancy time out from being waited on hand-and-foot, learn how to make your own cocktails at one of Gurney’s mixology classes.

6. The Crow’s Nest Inn and Restaurant

Hotel

You’ll no longer be in need of a lookout point once you’ve come across this charming and rustic inn. Nest up in one of the cottages, rural in spirit yet outfitted with modern amenities. If you’re a fan of oysters, gobble up as many as you please in front of a roaring open fire at this pearl of a restaurant. All dishes are locally and ethically sourced, so you can chow down on sea scallops and grilled organic chicken kebabs with a clear conscience.

7. The Roundtree, Amagansett

Luxury, Boutique Hotel

This hotel takes care of all of the planning so you can get straight to exploring. Head off on one of the signature experiences, such as a guided walking tour to see the top historic sights in Amagansett, a private docent-led tour at the Parrish Art Museum, or a winery tour in the North Fork. Return to your beautifully renovated room, which sports contemporary touches and is set in a historic property.
